Hong Kong, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand

Twenty-one days, 5,781 photos, four substantive destinations

28 December 2023 - 17 January 2024

Read from 5,781 photo timestamps across 4 effective country destinations + Istanbul transit, with coord-checks confirming Hong Kong stayed inside SAR territory and Đà Nẵng splitting cleanly into city centre vs. Bà Nà Hills. One logged ride (the Luang Prabang countryside loop on Jan 13) named into the Laos leg.

Twenty-one days across Hong Kong, Vietnam, Laos and Thailand, carrying Christmas week 2023 into mid-January 2024 - one of the densest shooting runs we’ve ever made by daily rate. Hong Kong opens with five days, including New Year’s Eve at Victoria Harbour, then eight days along the central Vietnamese coast and up to the north - Hội An, the Marble Mountains, Bà Nà Hills, Hải Vân Pass, Huế, Hà Nội, Tam Cốc and Hạ Long Bay - then three days each in Luang Prabang and Bangkok. The densest stretch of the whole trip sits in Hong Kong: three consecutive 500-photo days across the Avenue of Stars, the Victoria Peak hike that bled into the New Year’s Eve fireworks, and the Ngong Ping Trail up to the Tian Tan Buddha on New Year’s Day.

  • 3 Jan - flight from Hong Kong into Đà Nẵng, then straight south to Hội An’s old town - the lantern-lit Hoài River and the tailor streets all in one afternoon.
  • 4 Jan - a slow Hội An old-town day, the long town-walk threading the Old Quarter and the An Bang beach side.
  • 5 Jan - the central-coast peak day: the Marble Mountains (Ngũ Hành Sơn), Bà Nà Hills above Đà Nẵng, then the Hải Vân Pass north through Chân Mây - Lăng Cô towards Huế.
  • 6 Jan - Huế: the Imperial Citadel and the Perfume River pagodas (Thiên Mụ at Kim Long, the Tự Đức tomb up at Thuy Xuan), then the evening flight north to Hà Nội.
  • 7-8 Jan - the Old Quarter, the city’s tangle of streets, the lake, the night markets.
  • 9 Jan - the day-trip south to Tam Cốc / Hoa Lư - the karsts of Trang An rising out of the rice paddies.
  • 10 Jan - Hạ Long Bay: the boat day out of Hải Phòng / Tuần Châu, the limestone karsts on the water.

  • 11 Jan - the transit day out of Hà Nội into Luang Prabang.

  • 13 Jan - a morning ride out of the old town: 14.3 km / 114 m ascent through the Mekong countryside, just over an hour rolling. The afternoon dropped back into Xieng Men, the cultural village across the river, then the trip’s quietest stretch back on the peninsula.

A canonical South-East Asia tour, so an off-path score isn’t the point. The story is the sheer intensity - one of the highest sustained shooting rates we’ve recorded - and the three-day Hong Kong New Year burst that anchors the whole trip.

  1. absent Mainland China Despite 2,023 photos tagged CN, coord-check confirms 2,016 at Hong Kong + 7 near the HK/Zhuhai border. 0 photos in Beijing / Shanghai / Xi’an. The trip stayed inside SAR territory - mainland China is its own trip in 2025.
  2. absent Macau The cross-Pearl-River sister-SAR · reachable as a day-trip from HK · 0 photos at any Macau coord. The Dec 30 Lantau arc reached west but stopped short of Macau.
  3. absent Sapa The classic northern-Vietnam loop · 0 photos in the Sapa area. Vietnam stayed on the central-coast + Hà Nội + Hạ Long axis.
  4. absent Mai Châu The other northern-Vietnam valley loop · 0 photos in the Mai Châu area.
  5. absent Phong Nha The karst-cave country south of Huế · 0 photos in the Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng area.
  6. absent Mỹ Sơn sanctuary The Cham ruins inland from Hội An · 0 photos in the sanctuary area. The Hội An leg stayed in the old town and the central-coast spine.
  7. absent Vang Vieng The southern-Laos magnet · 0 photos south of Luang Prabang. The Laos leg was Luang Prabang only.
  8. absent Plain of Jars The other Laos magnet · 0 photos at Phonsavan / Xieng Khouang. The Laos leg was Luang Prabang only.
  9. absent Kuang Si Falls Luang Prabang’s signature day-trip · 0 photos in the falls area south of town. The Laos leg stayed in the UNESCO old town, the Mekong countryside ride, and across the river at Xieng Men.
  10. absent Cambodia Geographically central to the region · the Angkor / Siem Reap loop · 0 photos at any Cambodian coord.
  11. absent Myanmar Adjacent to Thailand + Laos · not visited - 0 photos at any Myanmar coord.
  12. absent Cheung Chau An SAR outer island · 0 photos in the Cheung Chau area. The Jan 1 Lantau touch reached Tian Tan Buddha but not the outer islands.
  13. absent Lamma An SAR outer island · 0 photos in the Lamma area.

A four-country South-East Asia core, with mainland China, Cambodia and Myanmar the obvious gaps around it. The mainland-China absence is the interesting one: the tags hint at a China visit, but the actual locations stay firmly inside Hong Kong. Mainland China would get its own trip in 2025; this was the SAR-plus-Indochina core, deliberately scoped. Within each visited country the trip skipped the second-tier loops - no Sapa or Phong Nha in Vietnam, no Kuang Si or Vang Vieng in Laos - in exchange for the central-coast spine and the Luang Prabang old town.
