Eleven days, 511 photos, an own-car loop bridging Christmas and New Year

26 December 2018 - 5 January 2019

Read from 511 photo timestamps across Austria and Hungary over an 11-day RO → HU → AT → HU → RO own-car circuit.

An eleven-day circuit across the Christmas-New-Year break, driven the whole way in our own car. Three nights in Vienna for the Christmas-week city, five in Kitzbühel and neighbouring Kirchberg-in-Tirol for the ski-and-New-Year stretch, two in Budapest on the road home. The trip’s defining day is New Year’s Day at Kitzbühel - the photo-densest day of all, an entire Alpine January 1st on the slopes and through the village. The afternoon before, we skied the Hahnenkamm itself - the famous Streif course - into the dark. A roughly 2,200-kilometre loop, all of it behind the wheel.

The single photo-densest day of the trip. Pure Kitzbühel locality — no excursion, no driving. An all-day Alpine New Year's Day on the slopes and in the village.

vs Sibiu-NYE 2017-18 · 24 pre-dawn photos at 04:02

A year earlier, New Year in Sibiu was photographed at dawn; here it’s photographed in full daylight on the snow - the same instinct, a completely different January. The forty-eight hours of Dec 31 and Jan 1 hold most of the trip’s energy: the holiday eve on the Hahnenkamm and the long bright morning after.

Thursday Dec 27 - the trip’s first real walking day, and a wide one: Stephansdom, the Hofburg, the Prater, a northern loop out to the Donau Park, and the State Opera in the evening. A whole-city day rather than a single-axis stroll.

  • Dec 26 - Boxing Day, almost entirely the long drive across Hungary, in over the Nădlac border and through Kecskemét, with Vienna reached by evening - close to 1,000 km in a day.
  • Dec 27 - the big Vienna day: Stephansdom and the Prater, a detour north to the Donau Park, the Hofburg, and the State Opera after dark.
  • Dec 28 - Belvedere late morning, Schönbrunn in the afternoon - both walked, neither given a full interior day. A lighter, palace-grounds kind of day.

New Year’s Day at Kitzbühel - the peak of the trip, a full day on the slopes and through the village with nowhere else to be. The afternoon before, we skied the Hahnenkamm itself - the legendary Streif - and stayed out on it into the dark.

  • Dec 30 - the first ski day, mostly phone-in-the-jacket-pocket: skiing, not photographing.
  • Dec 31 - over to Kirchberg at midday, the Hahnenkamm skied in the afternoon, and the village fireworks at night.
  • Jan 1 - the peak: an entire New Year’s Day, all of it Kitzbühel, no excursion, no driving.
  • Jan 2 - a last morning before the packing began.

Friday Jan 4 - one full Budapest day, weighted heavily to the Buda side: a long midday on Castle Hill, then Fishermen’s Bastion, Matthias Church and the Castle Hill Labyrinth all stacked together, the Chain Bridge crossing, and the Central Market Hall to close.

  • Jan 4 - the Buda Castle axis, across the Chain Bridge, a brief touch at St Stephen’s Basilica, and the Central Market Hall as the day’s endpoint.
  • Jan 5 - a couple of frames in the morning, then the long drive home.

Cross-trip NYE pair
vs 2017-18 Sibiu-NYE — daylight Tyrol vs dawn Sibiu
  1. Vienna centre ~5% Christmas-week — top global tourist density
  2. AT drive transits ~40% Walserfeld, Ramsau, Viehdorf — A1 corridor stops
  3. Kitzbühel village ~30% famous resort but moderate per-photo baseline
  4. Kitzbühel slopes ~5% Hahnenkamm Streif — top-decile ski coord
  5. Budapest centre ~5% top-decile

A mainstream Central European city + NYE-in-Tyrol trip — exactly what you’d guess from the locality names. The 3-anchor design produced no off-path richness because each anchor was the canonical name for its region (Vienna for AT capital, Kitzbühel for Tyrol resort, Budapest for HU capital).

  1. absent Vienna Christmas markets Dec 26-28 is the very tail of Christmas-market season — coord-checked at the Rathausplatz area, only 1 photo in 500 m. They were closing or closed in this window.
  2. absent Naschmarkt Vienna’s famous food market — 0 photos at the market coord.
  3. absent Salzburg city + Hallstatt Both checked: 0 photos. The A1 westbound transit Dec 29 passed Salzburg without stopping.
  4. absent Bratislava 0 photos. Vienna direct to Kitzbühel west, not east to Bratislava first.
  5. absent Hahnenkamm ski race Kitzbühel’s signature event is usually mid-January (3rd weekend) — the trip leaves Jan 3, two weeks too early. But the slope itself was skied on Dec 31.
  6. absent Hungarian Parliament + Heroes Square (Budapest) Both checked: 0 photos. The Friday Budapest day was Buda-Castle-weighted, not a full Pest walk. Only the Central Market Hall got Pest dwell.
  7. absent Eger / Lake Balaton Hungarian alternatives — not visited; Budapest was the only HU stop.

A 3-anchor city + ski + city tour that picked the canonical names from each leg’s geography and didn’t try to add side trips. The user prioritized time at each anchor over places per leg — none of the three bases is shorter than 2 nights, and the only sidetrack (the Hahnenkamm slope itself on Dec 31) is a within-resort detail, not a separate destination.
