Thirty days, 2,411 photos, five sub-trips in one suitcase

1 - 30 August 2018

Read from 2,411 photo timestamps, 3 logged hikes, 2 walks, 1 Santa Monica cycle ride, and the GPS line across the American West over 30 days.

Flew Bucharest to Paris CDG to SFO on Aug 1, settled into San Francisco for 12 days with Marin, Stinson, Silicon Valley and Napa side trips, then dropped south through Monterey, Carmel and the 17-Mile Drive (5 days), spent 5 days in Los Angeles, and finally the trip’s interpretive centerpiece: 4 desert-and-canyon days - a Santa Monica bike ride and a night drive out of LA, a Route 66 sweep through Amboy and Oatman, a 7.7 km descent into the Grand Canyon on Aug 25 (547 m climb on the return), and the slot canyons of Page. Closed with 4 nights in Las Vegas before the flight home. 2,411 photos · two 210-photo peaks at Napa wine country and the 17-Mile Drive · a 192-photo Grand Canyon day.

25 August · descent into the Grand Canyon

192 photos at the South Rim and a 7.7 km hike with 547 m of climbing on the return - the trip's second-biggest walk after the Muir Woods to Stinson Beach thru-hike.

The trip’s defining day. 192 photos at the canyon plus the recorded hike. The profile reads like the canonical drop-below-the-rim, climb-back-out experience - Bright Angel out to the 1.5 Mile Resthouse and back, with the West Rim Trail to Trailview Overlook bolted on. The hike sits inside a 4-day desert-and-canyon stretch the rest of the trip pivots around.

Flew home Las Vegas to Salt Lake City to Paris CDG to Bucharest. SLC is a rare connection for us; the routing reads as a deliberate Delta SkyTeam path back through CDG, not a disruption.

Westernmost reach
the Pacific coast off Pacific Grove and Point Reyes - the furthest-west reach of any trip so far
  1. SF city + sights ~5% top global tourist density
  2. Silicon Valley loop ~40% Apple, Google and Stanford triangle, less mainstream
  3. Marin / Stinson ~30% regional hike, mid-baseline
  4. Point Reyes evening ~50% national seashore, off-hours visit
  5. Napa wine valley ~20% well-trafficked but vineyard-specific
  6. 17-Mile Drive + Carmel ~5% top-decile California coast
  7. Big Sur drive ~30% drove through, no Hearst dwell
  8. LA + SM + Beverly ~5% top-decile
  9. Universal Studios ~0% top-decile theme park
  10. Route 66 ★ ~75% Oatman, Amboy, Ash Fork - deliberate nostalgia stops
  11. Grand Canyon ~0% top-decile natural site
  12. Marble Canyon / Page ~40% lesser-traveled than the South Rim
  13. Vegas Strip ~0% top-decile

The trip-level reading hides a strong bimodal split: the canonical names (SF, 17-Mile, Universal, Grand Canyon, Vegas Strip) sit at 0-5% while the Route 66 and Marble Canyon stretch runs at 75%. Oatman (population around 100, wild burros, an old mining town), Amboy (a Mojave-roadside trading post) and Ash Fork (a small Route 66 town in northern Arizona) are not on any standard US road-trip itinerary - they’re deliberate Route 66 nostalgia stops, the trip’s most distinctive off-path stretch.

  1. absent Yosemite SF Bay to Yosemite is the canonical week-of-Bay day-trip. Never visited. Aug 8-10 we did Stanford and Marin instead.
  2. absent San Diego The natural LA southern extension - never visited. The trip stayed at LAX-radius and pivoted east instead.
  3. absent Joshua Tree National Park On the standard LA to desert route - the Aug 23-24 exit chose the Cajon, Mojave and I-40 line via Amboy and Oatman instead, so Joshua Tree slipped to one side.
  4. absent Sedona Arizona’s iconic red-rock town. We preferred Route 66 (further west) over the central-AZ route through Sedona.
  5. absent Hearst Castle The Aug 17 PCH drive passed San Simeon but stopped a few miles south at the Piedras Blancas elephant-seal viewpoint instead. No frames at the castle itself.
  6. absent Lake Powell The Page stop hit Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend but skipped the reservoir itself. Nothing at Wahweap.
  7. absent Hoover Dam The Page to Vegas route stayed north of the dam. Never crossed it.
  8. absent Zion The natural extension north of the Grand Canyon - not visited. The trip pivoted west to Vegas instead of north into Utah.
  9. absent Bryce Canyon The other natural extension into Utah - not visited. Same westward pivot to Vegas.

A coastal-California and canyon-country itinerary that chose road-trip nostalgia over wilderness depth. Route 66 and the 17-Mile Drive over Yosemite and Zion. A driver’s trip more than a hiker’s, even with two real walks (Stinson 874 m, Grand Canyon 547 m) bracketing the geography and a Santa Monica bike ride threaded through the LA wind-down.
