Twenty days, 3,323 photos, the second consecutive Asian New Year
27 December 2024 - 15 January 2025
Read from 3,323 photo timestamps across Taiwan, Vietnam and Hong Kong, 3 logged hikes totalling 26.5 km, and the per-day locality breakdown across the 20-day arc.
The argument
Twenty days across Taiwan, Vietnam and Hong Kong, bridging Christmas week 2024 into mid-January 2025 - the second year running of a New-Year’s-spanning Asia trip after the 2023-24 Vietnam-China-Laos run. The pulse is a tight cluster of huge days around the turn of the year: New Year’s Eve at the foot of Taipei 101, New Year’s Day across Beitou and Tamsui, then the trip’s biggest day on January 2 up in the Maokong tea hills south of the city. Taiwan is plainly the centre of gravity; Vietnam and Hong Kong are the supporting arcs around it.

Istanbul transits~0%airport · not a stop

Saigon~15%two well-known districts, Ben Thanh + Cho Lon · saturated coords
Phú Quốc~30%well-known Vietnamese beach island · the Long Beach base is mainstream, the night market less so
Hong Kong core~5%top-decile global · the Peak + Tsim Sha Tsui + Central are saturated

Sha Tin / Kowloon East~40%the Ten Thousand Buddhas + Wong Tai Sin axis runs at lower density than the harbour
The canonical Asian capitals run at ~5-15% off-path. The trip’s signal is structural rather than geographic: a 2nd consecutive New-Year’s-spanning Southeast-Asia run, with the NYE location swapping from Hong Kong 2023-24 to Taipei 2024-25. The 300+ photo days clustered around Dec 31 / Jan 1 / Jan 2 are the trip’s pulse - the Taipei 101 fireworks at one of the world’s most-photographed displays is not off-path geographically, but it is a deliberate choice of when to be where.
absentHanoiVietnam’s other major city. The Vietnam leg stayed in the south and the north was not visited.
absentHội AnThe canonical central-Vietnam stop. Skipped on this run; the Vietnam time went to Cho Lon and beach decompression instead.
absentHạ Long BayThe most-photographed Vietnamese coast. Not on the route - the trip’s water came from Phú Quốc instead.
absentMekong DeltaA canonical day-trip from Saigon. No photos south of the city; the time went to Cho Lon and an early Phú Quốc flight instead.
absentMacauAdjacent to Hong Kong via the one-hour ferry. Canonical HK day-trip - no photo cluster registers across the Pearl River estuary.
absentLantau IslandThe big west-island day everyone does from Hong Kong. The HK time went to Sha Tin and Wong Tai Sin instead.
absentTian Tan BuddhaThe Big Buddha on Lantau is the canonical day-trip statue. No photo cluster registers at Ngong Ping.
absentTaroko GorgeTaiwan’s headline natural site on the east coast. Seven Taiwan days but the photo geometry stays around Taipei - no east-coast cluster.
absentJiufenThe hillside teahouse town northeast of Taipei. A common one-day extension from the city - no photo cluster registers.
absentNational Palace MuseumTaipei’s headline museum at the Shilin foot of Yangmingshan. Dec 30 ended at Shilin Night Market with no photos at the museum coords.
A Taipei-centric Taiwan and a southern-tilted Vietnam. The Taiwan stayed in and around Taipei (no Taroko, no east coast, no Jiufen); the Vietnam stayed south (no Hanoi, no Hội An, no Mekong); the Hong Kong stayed in HK proper (no Macau, no Lantau). The compression into four anchors trades coverage for dwell - each base gets multiple days, none gets a full country.
