Taiwan, Vietnam, Hong Kong

Twenty days, 3,323 photos, the second consecutive Asian New Year

27 December 2024 - 15 January 2025

Read from 3,323 photo timestamps across Taiwan, Vietnam and Hong Kong, 3 logged hikes totalling 26.5 km, and the per-day locality breakdown across the 20-day arc.

Twenty days across Taiwan, Vietnam and Hong Kong, bridging Christmas week 2024 into mid-January 2025 - the second year running of a New-Year’s-spanning Asia trip after the 2023-24 Vietnam-China-Laos run. The pulse is a tight cluster of huge days around the turn of the year: New Year’s Eve at the foot of Taipei 101, New Year’s Day across Beitou and Tamsui, then the trip’s biggest day on January 2 up in the Maokong tea hills south of the city. Taiwan is plainly the centre of gravity; Vietnam and Hong Kong are the supporting arcs around it.

Slow stretch
Jan 6-9 · Phú Quốc · 91 photos across four days
  1. Istanbul transits ~0% airport · not a stop
  2. Taipei core ~10% top-decile Asian capital · NYE concentrates the densest hours at the most-photographed coords
  3. Yangmingshan ~40% less-photographed than the city · a proper ridge walk inside the national park
  4. Maokong ~35% tea hills + gondola · a domestic-tourist circuit, less Flickr-dense than the city
  5. Saigon ~15% two well-known districts, Ben Thanh + Cho Lon · saturated coords
  6. Phú Quốc ~30% well-known Vietnamese beach island · the Long Beach base is mainstream, the night market less so
  7. Hong Kong core ~5% top-decile global · the Peak + Tsim Sha Tsui + Central are saturated
  8. Dragon's Back ★ ~35% well-known HK trail · less photo-dense than the Peak
  9. Sha Tin / Kowloon East ~40% the Ten Thousand Buddhas + Wong Tai Sin axis runs at lower density than the harbour

The canonical Asian capitals run at ~5-15% off-path. The trip’s signal is structural rather than geographic: a 2nd consecutive New-Year’s-spanning Southeast-Asia run, with the NYE location swapping from Hong Kong 2023-24 to Taipei 2024-25. The 300+ photo days clustered around Dec 31 / Jan 1 / Jan 2 are the trip’s pulse - the Taipei 101 fireworks at one of the world’s most-photographed displays is not off-path geographically, but it is a deliberate choice of when to be where.

  1. absent Hanoi Vietnam’s other major city. The Vietnam leg stayed in the south and the north was not visited.
  2. absent Hội An The canonical central-Vietnam stop. Skipped on this run; the Vietnam time went to Cho Lon and beach decompression instead.
  3. absent Hạ Long Bay The most-photographed Vietnamese coast. Not on the route - the trip’s water came from Phú Quốc instead.
  4. absent Mekong Delta A canonical day-trip from Saigon. No photos south of the city; the time went to Cho Lon and an early Phú Quốc flight instead.
  5. absent Macau Adjacent to Hong Kong via the one-hour ferry. Canonical HK day-trip - no photo cluster registers across the Pearl River estuary.
  6. absent Lantau Island The big west-island day everyone does from Hong Kong. The HK time went to Sha Tin and Wong Tai Sin instead.
  7. absent Tian Tan Buddha The Big Buddha on Lantau is the canonical day-trip statue. No photo cluster registers at Ngong Ping.
  8. absent Taroko Gorge Taiwan’s headline natural site on the east coast. Seven Taiwan days but the photo geometry stays around Taipei - no east-coast cluster.
  9. absent Jiufen The hillside teahouse town northeast of Taipei. A common one-day extension from the city - no photo cluster registers.
  10. absent National Palace Museum Taipei’s headline museum at the Shilin foot of Yangmingshan. Dec 30 ended at Shilin Night Market with no photos at the museum coords.

A Taipei-centric Taiwan and a southern-tilted Vietnam. The Taiwan stayed in and around Taipei (no Taroko, no east coast, no Jiufen); the Vietnam stayed south (no Hanoi, no Hội An, no Mekong); the Hong Kong stayed in HK proper (no Macau, no Lantau). The compression into four anchors trades coverage for dwell - each base gets multiple days, none gets a full country.
