Forty-one days, six countries, a long southern-Norway centrepiece and a Netherlands that pointedly skipped Amsterdam
9 August - 18 September 2022
Read from 5,480 photo timestamps, four logged hikes, and the GPS line through 6 countries on a single rented car.
The argument
We flew into Stockholm, picked up a car, gave the Swedish capital five days and Gothenburg a glance, then spent nineteen days roving southern Norway - Norefjell, the Hardanger Fjord and Hardangervidda, Stavanger and Preikestolen, the Lysefjord, the Jæren coast, Kristiansand and the Sørlandet shore, back to Oslo - before short hops on to Copenhagen, Luxembourg, Belgium’s three art cities of Brussels, Bruges and Ghent, and a Netherlands finish that skipped Amsterdam entirely for Giethoorn, the Zaandam windmills and Rotterdam. The single biggest day, unexpectedly, was the canal village of Giethoorn - the Dutch leg’s quiet centrepiece, and the second year running we’d done a 40-plus-day late-summer European trip.

The signature
Southern Norway, the half we hadn't done
Nineteen days inside one country: the second-longest stretch of the trip and the third we'd ever spent inside Norway. The 2019 run went from Bergen up to Nordkapp and back, all coast and Arctic. 2022 was the part below that line - Hardanger, Lysefjord, Jæren, Sørlandet - mostly under our own steam and never repeating a base.
Nights in Norway
19 of 40
Hardanger Fjord days
Aug 18 → Aug 21 · scenic-road and glacier hike
Preikestolen
Aug 22 · 10.4 km, 531 m ascent · the pulpit cliff above the Lysefjord
Lysebotn road
Aug 26 · the high road in and out of the Lysefjord head
Jæren coast
Aug 27 · Klepp, Orre, Hå, Sirevåg, Eigersund in one sweep
Sørlandet stretch
Aug 28 → Aug 31 · Lyngdal, Kristiansand, Arendal
The leg’s standout isn’t a single day, it’s the way the route stitches itself around the southern fjords without ever doubling back. Norefjell first, then the Hardangervidda plateau crossing into Eidfjord. Hardanger Fjord west, then the Sørfjorden south through Ullensvang. Pulpit Rock from Strand, then Stavanger as the leg’s first city pause. Lysebotn out and back. The Jæren coast south. Kristiansand for two settled days. Arendal up the Sørlandet shore. Oslo to close. No base used twice.

The exit on Sep 18 was a flight from Schiphol to Munich, then a long German autobahn run home through Wermelskirchen and into Romania at Cornești. The 1,388 km long-drive flag covers both legs together, not a single behind-the-wheel day. The Aug 9 long-drive flag is similarly the inbound OTP→VIE→ARN flight chain, not a road drive.

Aug 10 (205 photos) the big Stockholm city day; Aug 13 (188) a Stockholm and Solna day before the westward push.
9 Aug · the flight in via Vienna, landing at Arlanda in the evening and out to the Stockholm overnight
10 Aug · the big Stockholm city day - the trip’s first peak
11-12 Aug · more of Stockholm at an easier pace
13 Aug · Stockholm and Solna, the last full day in the capital
14 Aug · west across Sweden to Gothenburg, then on towards the Bohuslän coast
The Netherlands leg is the off-path story. Amsterdam shows only 2 photos at the locality - we had visited in 2017 and consciously chose Giethoorn (canal village) + Zaandam (windmills) + Rotterdam (modern city) instead. That’s the deliberate move, not the score.
absentBergenNorway’s second city and the canonical western-fjord gateway - 0 photos despite 19 days in Norway. The trip stayed southern.
absentLofoten IslandsThe 2019 trip went far north; 2022 explicitly did not. No photos above ~62°N.
absentGeirangerfjordAn earlier draft speculated Aug 18 was Geiranger - coord-check disproves it. The fjord drive was Hardanger, well south of Geiranger.
absentTrondheimNorway’s third city - 0 photos. Off the southern circuit.
absentAmsterdam centreTwo photos at the locality across 5 Dutch days. The choice to skip is the data.
absentBerlinPassed through Germany only as a brief transit on the exit day - no city dwell.
absentHamburgPassed through Germany only as a brief transit on the exit day - no city dwell.
A southern-Norway return rather than a re-tour of 2019’s 56-day far-north route, and a Netherlands without Amsterdam. The trip’s identity is in those two negative choices - second-visit countries get the under-photographed corners, first-visit countries get the canonical core. The Belgian leg is the exception: all three art-cities (Brussels + Bruges + Ghent) hit, plus a closing pass through the Kempen.
