Forty-one days, 5,480 photos, the second consecutive Europe-summer road trip

9 August - 18 September 2022

Read from 5,480 photo timestamps and the GPS line through 6 effective countries, with coord-based cluster checks resolving locality ambiguities.

We drove out via Austria, gave Stockholm and southern Sweden six days, then spent nineteen days roving Norway - Oslo, the Hardanger Fjord, Stavanger and Preikestolen, the Sørlandet coast, back to Oslo - before Copenhagen, Luxembourg, Belgium’s three art cities of Brussels, Bruges and Ghent, and a Netherlands finish that skipped Amsterdam entirely for Giethoorn, the Zaandam windmills and Rotterdam. The single biggest day, unexpectedly, was the canal village of Giethoorn - the Dutch leg’s quiet centrepiece, and the second year running we’d done a 40-day late-summer European drive.

none — every base visited once
  1. Stockholm + S Sweden ~10% canonical Scandinavian capital
  2. Norway (second visit) ~30% Hardanger + Sørlandet less mainstream than Bergen / Lofoten
  3. Copenhagen ~5% top-decile Nordic capital
  4. Luxembourg ~30% less-photographed micro-capital
  5. Brussels + Bruges + Ghent ~5% canonical Flanders art-cities
  6. Netherlands non-Amsterdam ~35% Giethoorn + Zaandam + Rotterdam route deliberately avoids the canonical Amsterdam circuit

The Netherlands leg is the off-path story. Amsterdam shows only 2 photos at the locality — the user had visited in 2017 and consciously chose Giethoorn (canal village) + Zaandam (windmills) + Rotterdam (modern city) instead. That’s the deliberate move, not the score.

  1. absent Bergen Norway’s second city and the canonical western-fjord gateway — 0 photos despite 19 days in Norway. The trip stayed southern.
  2. absent Lofoten Islands The 2019 trip went far north; 2022 explicitly did not. No photos above ~62°N.
  3. absent Geiranger Fjord Earlier brief speculated Aug 18 was Geiranger — coord-check disproves it. The fjord drive was Hardanger, ~250 km south.
  4. absent Trondheim Norway’s third city — 0 photos. Off the southern circuit.
  5. absent Amsterdam centre Two photos at the locality across 5 Dutch days. The choice to skip is the data.
  6. absent Berlin and Hamburg On the route home — passed through Germany but no city dwell.

A southern-Norway return rather than a re-tour of 2019’s 56-day far-north route, and a Netherlands without Amsterdam. The trip’s identity is in those two negative choices — second-visit countries get the under-photographed corners, first-visit countries get the canonical core. The Belgian leg is the exception: all three art-cities (Brussels + Bruges + Ghent) hit.
