Read from 9,555 photo timestamps, 25 named hikes, one bike ride down the Rallarvegen, and the unbroken overland track of 77 days - and from all the stops that never became workouts: the Varanger coast road, Tungeneset at dusk, the Skagsanden shore, the Arctic Circle crossed on a ferry deck, the Atlantic Road bridges and the Timmelsjoch.

The argument

We left Bucharest on May 25 and opened with a capital sprint - five capitals in seven days, every one of them walked:

Krakow, Warsaw, Vilnius, Riga, Tallinn - two nights for Warsaw, one everywhere else, then the evening ferry across the Gulf of Finland
Finland took another week, lake country to Oulanka’s canyon to Inari, and on June 8 the road crossed into Arctic Norway
then came 44 days of Norway without a repeat: the Varanger bird coast and the 370-photo day around Vardø
the midnight sun still burning over the North Cape plateau at half past midnight
the 18.3 km walk out to Knivskjellodden, where the continent actually ends and where we stood on our furthest-north ground so far
then Senja’s walls, Reinebringen above Reine
the Helgeland coast taken ferry by ferry across the Arctic Circle
the Atlantic Road, Trollstigen, Runde’s puffin cliffs

The signature

10-11 June · midnight sun on the North Cape plateau

The sun rolled along the Barents Sea horizon and simply refused to set - 86 frames between ten at night and half past midnight, on the first of three straight days on Magerøya.

The Arctic half of the trip was built around this window. We were north of the Arctic Circle from June 8 until the Helgeland ferry on June 27, all of it inside the midnight-sun season, but the night of June 10 on the plateau is where it registered: after the last tunnel we drove up through a lid of low cloud and spent our first hour standing above it, and when it cleared the evening stayed strangely mild - 14 degrees at the top of Europe - the parking lot slowly emptying of tour buses, and the light refusing to change at all. Two evenings later we skipped the globe monument and its crowd and walked the 18.3 km out to Knivskjellodden, the low slate point that actually holds the continent’s northernmost ground. Standing on it was the trip’s high-water mark in the literal, map sense: we had never been further north.

There were two return plans. The one we left home with ended the trip on day 64: out of Hardanger to Sweden on Jul 18, Copenhagen, a Lübeck lunch, four nights of ridge hikes and lake kayaking on Lake Lucerne, the Grossglockner road, and home through Budapest by Jul 28. We tore that up from a Vega boathouse at the halfway mark and bought two more weeks - the full Norwegian south coast, and the Alps traded for a Dolomites block. So the actual way home was the new plan working, not something going wrong: two driving days out of Alta Badia. Aug 8 was the long one, 557 km in a single push across Slovenia and Croatia to the Serbian border, two hours of it standing in the Lipovac queue, ending at Novi Sad near midnight. Aug 9 traded speed for the ending we wanted - the Danube’s Iron Gates, past Golubac fortress and through the Đerdap gorge, across into Romania in the evening, and into Bucharest by night.

Jul 10 · Galdhøpiggen · 317 photos, the trip’s second-densest day - 1,540 m up from Spiterstulen to Norway’s highest point at 2,469 m, boot-packed snowfields and then a summit hut standing above every other rock in the country. The knee made the descent a slow, medicated argument; the summit made it worth having.

The honest reading here is temporal as much as spatial. The North Cape plateau is one of the most-visited points in Arctic Europe, but by eleven at night the buses are gone and the light is the whole event - we were standing on tourist ground at an empty hour. Same trick in the Dolomites: gondola country, walked from the passes at eight in the morning. And the most crowded thing we dodged, we dodged on purpose - on Senja we climbed Hesten to look at Segla rather than queue to stand on it.

Negative space

absent Oslo Forty-four days in Norway and we never touched the capital. We came in from Finnish Lapland at the top of the country and left by ferry from the south coast - Oslo sat well off the line and stayed there.
absent Bergen The fjord legs orbited it, and Voss is only up the valley, but the route turned inland at Hardanger. Norway’s second city never got a single frame.
absent Trondheim Jul 1 went past its doorstep on the way to Inderøy and Nidaros never happened. The fjord farms of the Golden Road won the evening.
absent Preikestolen Jul 19 ran the coast south of Stavanger within an hour of the ferry queue. After Skåla and Galdhøpiggen, and with one knee already rationed, a four-hour queue-hike had nothing left to offer us.
absent Trolltunga We booked four nights by its trailhead town for exactly this, one of them added purely as weather buffer. Then Skåla’s descent wrecked a knee, and by Jul 16 a level kilometre was the day’s ceiling. Norway’s most photographed ledge stayed an hour away, and the fishing rod got the days instead.
absent Besseggen We took Jotunheimen’s summit and left its famous ridge alone - Galdhøpiggen from Spiterstulen, no Gjende boat, no Besseggen.
absent Stegastein We drove the Aurlandsfjellet snow road straight past the turnoff and never pulled in at the platform. The fjord view came instead from Undredal, down at water level.
absent Tre Cime di Lavaredo Ten Dolomites hikes and not the famous one. The toll road, the parking war, the loop shared with three thousand other people - Fanes and the Tofana di Rozes gave us the same rock without any of it.
absent Lago di Braies The most photographed lake in the Dolomites sat 30 minutes from our base and we never went. Rowing-boat sunrise queues are a different holiday.
absent Seceda Two days in Val Gardena spent looking straight at the Odle group, and the ridgeline lift-selfie classic stayed unridden - the Puez traverse crossed the same massif from the quiet side.
absent Ryten The Lofoten plan starred two climbs: Reinebringen and Ryten above Kvalvika beach. A rain-locked week offered one clear window and Reinebringen took it. The Kvalvika side of Moskenesøya never got a frame.
absent Nigardsbreen A guided ice walk on the glacier tongue sat in the plan for Jul 12, down to the ten o’clock start. The Skåla knee vetoed crampons; we borrowed the hotel’s kayaks and paddled Lustrafjorden instead, and the blue ice went unvisited.
absent Vajolet Towers Aug 3’s objective. We were at the Vigo di Fassa gondola by ten in the morning when the landslide announcement came over the speakers: trail closed. Passo Rolle inherited the day, and the towers stayed on the list for another year.
absent Grossglockner The itinerary we left home with returned this way - Sweden, Copenhagen, four nights on Lake Lucerne, then the Grossglockner road, doorstep by late July. When we rewrote the return from Vega and gave those weeks to the Dolomites, the Grossglockner went un-driven, along with the entire Swiss block.

The pattern held all the way from the Barents Sea to the Dolomites: take the walk, skip the queue. The Cape, but at midnight. Knivskjellodden over the globe monument. Hesten over Segla. Spiterstulen over Besseggen. Fishing days at Trolltunga’s doorstep, with a knee casting the deciding vote. Fanes over Tre Cime, and the Puez side of the Odle over the Seceda lift. All three of Norway’s biggest cities - Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim - went unvisited in a 44-day traverse of the country: the line we drew ran through trailheads, ferry quays and fishing villages, not city centres.

The verdict

We backed out of our own driveway in Bucharest on a late-May morning and pulled back into it in early August, and not one of the kilometres in between was flown.

14,618 km of them on the odometer: north through the Polish and Baltic capitals, up the length of Finland, then forty-four unbroken days of Norway - the bird coast at Varanger, the midnight sun over the North Cape, Senja, Lofoten, the Helgeland ferry chain, the big fjords, Jotunheimen, and the way out at the southern tip - before two weeks in the Dolomites softened the road home.

It turned into our biggest climbing trip so far: 15,987 m of trail ascent across 25 hikes, more than any other trip through summer 2026, and at Knivskjellodden we put down our furthest-north step of any trip so far. Only one trip has run longer in days, and only one has carried more hikes. What stays with us is the shape of it: one continuous line, drawn on roads, rails, ferry decks and footpaths.
