Nine days, 494 photos, the southern Romania loop

14 - 22 September 2020

Read from 494 photo timestamps + 22 km logged walking across ~30 southern Romania localities — moving every 2 nights.

9 days touring southern Romania by motorhome, mid-September 2020 — sequel to the August caravan trip but with different geography. 494 photos covering the Danube Gorges (Cazanele Dunării at Eșelnița + Dubova) + Banat-mountain villages + Lotru valley + Făgăraș foothills, ending at the familiar Predeluț hamlet in the Bran area. Peak on Thu Sep 17 with 156 photos across 8 Banat-mountain villages (Caraș-Severin county heartland). The interpretively significant geometry: the user closed the loop at Predeluț — the same hamlet visited in 2016 Oct, 2017 Aug, 2018 Jul, and 2019 Aug/Sep — making it the user’s most-returned-to RO coord with 5 visits in 4 years.

Regions covered
5 (Oltenia · Danube Gorges · Banat · Lotru · Făgăraș/Bran)
  1. Drăgășani Oltenia wine ~80% RO-famous wine region, sparse intl. photos
  2. Danube Gorges (Cazanele) ~40% well-known but sparse international photo density
  3. Sasca Montană / Nerei NP ~80% remote Banat parks
  4. Banat mountains misc ~90% Eftimie Murgu mills + Bozovici + Ciclova
  5. Băile Herculane ~30% Roman-era spa town, well-known in RO
  6. Lotru / Voineasa ~75% less-touristed Carpathian range
  7. Făgăraș foothills + Jina ~75% Mărginimea Sibiului villages
  8. Predeluț close ~75% consistent across all 5 visits

~70% trip-average off-path — a deeply off-path Romanian regional tour. Most of these coords are below international Flickr-density radar. Sfânta Elena (the Czech-heritage village inside the Danube Gorges) and the Eftimie Murgu water mills are particularly under-photographed for what they are.

  1. absent Trajan's Bridge piers (Drobeta) Roman bridge ruins visible from the Serbian side — coord touched but no clear dwell.
  2. absent Cazanele Mari + Mici lookouts The canonical Danube Gorges viewpoints — coords nearby but no specific identification in the photo set.
  3. absent Cheile Nerei-Beușnița NP interior trails Entered the area (Sasca Română) but no high-mileage hike clusters prove a deep walk.
  4. absent Tabula Traiana memorial The Roman inscription on the Serbian side, visible from Dubova — visited the Gorges but no border-crossing.
  5. absent Bran castle interior 5 trips to Bran-area in 4 years, still 0 Bran-castle interior visits. The user keeps closing loops at Predeluț without ever entering the valley’s signature monument.

A motorhome’s-eye view of southern Romania’s most-distinctive regional features — Oltenia wine, Banat mountains, Danube Gorges, Lotru — followed by the closing return to the family-comfort Bran valley. The motorhome format unlocks micro-village access; the closing routine is the user’s known affinity for the same Carpathian hamlet.
