Three days, 83 photos, autumn in the Bucegi south-west valleys
19 - 21 October 2018
Read from 83 photo timestamps across 5 villages on the Bucegi south-west flank, plus one tracked workout (Cheile Zănoagei - Lacul Scropoasă, Sat Oct 20).
The argument
A three-day October weekend in Moroeni, the gateway village for the Bucegi’s quieter south-west flank. The trip ran the classic autumn-hike arc: a near-silent Friday drive up with one roadside pause at Dobrești, a full Saturday on the Cheile Zănoagei - Lacul Scropoasă trail out of the Moroeni/Glod trailheads, and an easy Sunday home through Pucioasa. It was our first time in this valley - a deliberate break from three consecutive weekends in the same Bran-Moieciu corner, the trip where we started widening the map.

Sat Oct 20 - Cheile Zănoagei to Lacul Scropoasă
The trip's defining day. A tracked ~16 km hike out of the Moroeni/Glod trailheads, through the Zănoagei gorge and up to the Scropoasa reservoir on the south-west flank of the Bucegi. The photo cadence sits right on top of the workout line.

not reached (Babele / Sfinxul / Omu stayed above the ridge)
The lake itself - a small hydro reservoir tucked into the Zănoagei limestone - is the natural turn-around for a one-day push from the valley. The choice that defines the trip is the one not made: the Padina / Peștera refuges and the Bucegi summit ridge sit a few hours’ further climb above the Scropoasa basin, and we stopped at the lake.

Barely a trace - a few frames at Dobrești, a small village on the road up from Bucharest through Pucioasa, the one place we stopped long enough to take the camera out. We must have reached Moroeni in the late afternoon and let the evening pass quietly; the trip really begins on Saturday.

The day the trip was for. A tracked Cheile Zănoagei - Lacul Scropoasă hike out of the Moroeni/Glod trailheads on the Bucegi south-west flank - up through the Zănoagei gorge to the Scropoasa reservoir and back. ~16 km on foot with ~1,198 m of climb over the day, the single logged hike of the weekend, and the photo cadence sits right on top of that line. The reservoir is the natural one-day turn-around from this side; the Bucegi summit plateau (Babele, Sfinxul) sits a few hours further up and we stayed below it.

The way home, taken gently - a last short morning around Moroeni and Glod, then a stop at Pucioasa, the sulphur-spa town down the valley, the kind of place you pull over for a coffee before the long road back to Bucharest. A handful of frames and then the weekend was done.
Off-path · per zone
Moroeni / Glod / Pucheni~25%RO-hiker baseline — known among domestic enthusiasts
Cheile Zănoagei / Lacul Scropoasă~30%popular RO-hiker objective from the Moroeni side, quiet by global baseline
On a global English-language baseline the trip sits at ~75% off-path; on a Romanian-hiker baseline ~25%. The structural choice that matters: the user chose Moroeni over Brașov-side villages, diversifying their RO hike geography after three trips to the Bran-Moieciu corner.
absentBucegi summit ridge (Babele, Sfinxul, Omu)The Cheile Zănoagei / Lacul Scropoasă route climbs toward the western edge of the Bucegi plateau. The Saturday hike topped out at the Scropoasa reservoir, well below the ridge.
absentPadina + Peștera refugesThe natural overnight points for Bucegi-summit hikes from the west flank, a couple of hours above the Scropoasa basin. The tracked hike stayed at lake level and never reached them.
absentCheile TătaruluiThe next gorge upstream from Zănoagei, a common pairing on longer Bucegi-SW circuits. Not on the tracked line.
absentPucioasa Băi spaPucioasa has a sulphur spa. The Sun-morning Pucioasa coord is consistent with a brief spa-town stop, but no extended dwell.
absentSinaia30 km E — the canonical busier Prahova axis. Never visited; the trip deliberately chose the quieter SW side.
absentBușteni (Prahova-valley alternative)30 km E — the canonical busier Prahova axis. Never visited; the trip deliberately chose the quieter SW side.
A short Bucegi-flank weekend that stayed low. The user chose Moroeni’s quieter SW trailheads over the busier Sinaia / Bușteni Prahova axis, and on the tracked Saturday hike stopped at the Scropoasa reservoir rather than pushing for the summit plateau above.
