Two days, 184 photos, one Ciucaș ridge hike

25 - 26 May 2024

Read from 184 photo timestamps across two calendar days and one tracked Sunday hike workout (11.25 km · 766 m ascent · max ~1,894 m) starting from Cabana Muntele Roșu above Cheia.

A Saturday drive up from Bucharest through the Prahova Valley, threading past Brașov and Zărnești - barely a frame on the way - and then a full Sunday hiking day out of Cheia. The whole trip lives in that one day. It’s a deliberate return to the Ciucaș massif four years after the May 2020 outing, the same month and the same range, but a different line this time: from Cabana Muntele Roșu up over Muntele Roșu and along the ridge to Vârful Gropșoarele. One logged hike of 11.2 km · 766 m of ascent is the entire activity, and the entire point.

Sun May 26 - Muntele Roșu → Vârful Gropșoarele

A single tracked Ciucaș-ridge hike out of Cabana Muntele Roșu above Cheia. The route climbs over Muntele Roșu (1,765 m) and follows the ridge to Vârful Gropșoarele (1,883 m), then returns the same way.

The recorded high point at ~1,894 m sits a touch above the Gropșoarele summit reading, consistent with a ridge walk that passes the cross and continues a few metres along the crest. A four-and-three-quarter-hour out-and-back, the whole weekend’s reason for being on the road.

The day the trip was for - the Muntele Roșu → Gropșoarele hike out of Cheia, an 11.2 km walk on the Ciucaș ridge and nearly every frame of the weekend. The same massif as the May 2020 outing, the same month, but a different trail this time. Coming back to the Ciucaș on purpose is the most telling thing the trip says.

  1. Brașov + Zărnești drive ~20% well-trafficked Carpathian transit
  2. Măneciu / Cheia area ~50% Ciucaș is quieter than Bucegi or Piatra Craiului

The interest is not in geography - Ciucaș is moderately known among Romanian hikers - but in the repeat-visit pattern. The same massif was walked in May 2020, on a different line (Şaua Tigăilor / Vf Ciucaș then, Muntele Roșu / Gropșoarele now). That’s the signal the data carries that any single-trip off-path score cannot.

  1. absent Vârful Ciucaș summit (1,954 m) The 2020 trip’s target, the canonical peak of the massif. This weekend’s line stays on the parallel Gropșoarele ridge to the south and never reaches the main summit.
  2. absent Bucegi Plateau 12 km south, the canonical Prahova Valley hike. Passed near on the drive but never the destination this weekend.
  3. absent Piatra Craiului Adjacent to Zărnești - touched as drive-through only. Zero hike signal there.
  4. absent Brașov old town Brașov appears in the Saturday photo trail but not as a stay. A transit through, not a stop.
  5. absent The trailhead village itself All 174 Sunday frames sit on the Muntele Roșu / Gropșoarele ridge above the village; no separate dwell down in the streets registers in the data. The village was the start of the hike, not a stop.

A pure hike weekend - no city, no monument, no rest-day extension. The trip is the workout. The return to the Ciucaș four years after the 2020 outing is the deliberate move; everything else is logistics.
