Cheia, Ciucaș Ridge Hike
One day, 119 photos, the first post-lockdown trip
Read from one geocoded photo cluster around Cheia in Prahova county and one tracked workout: a 7.47 km · 515 m hike from the Cabana Vârful Ciucaș toward the summit via Şaua Tigăilor.
A single-day push into the Ciucaș on the exact afternoon Romania’s COVID state-of-emergency lifted. The shape is simple: drive up from Bucharest through Măneciu to Cheia, climb out of the village toward Vârful Ciucaș via the Şaua Tigăilor saddle, and back. 7.5 km · 515 m of ascent, topping out around 1,949 m, a handful of metres shy of the 1,954 m summit. The photo cluster sits entirely around the trailhead village; the GPS line is the day. After months shut in, choosing a real mountain hike as the way back out is the defining note of the year.
Fri May 15 - Şaua Tigăilor toward Vârful Ciucaș
A single tracked ascent out of Cheia on the day Romania reopened. The Cabana Vârful Ciucaș sits at the trailhead; the route climbs through the Şaua Tigăilor saddle to within a few metres of the summit, then drops back.

The recorded high point at 1,949 m makes this almost certainly a summit-ridge ascent that turned just below the cross. Whether weather, time, or a deliberate stop, the line never registers the final few metres - a small, honest gap between this day and the canonical Ciucaș peak.

Geographic off-path is honest but secondary. The trip’s most defining context is temporal: the very first outing after Romania’s COVID lockdown. The choice of a real mountain hike (not a beach or city stay) as the first reopened trip is itself the interesting signal - geographic-off-path scoring can’t measure that.
- absent Vârful Ciucaș summit (1,954 m) The 1,949 m max elevation suggests the line stopped a few metres below the cross - possibly weather, possibly time, possibly deliberate. The summit tag itself never lands.
- absent Bratocea pass + Tigăile Mari pinnacles The classic Ciucaș crossing continues west along the ridge from Şaua Tigăilor over the Bratocea pass and the rock pinnacles. The tracked line stays on the summit spur and back; the through-ridge stays unwalked.
- absent An overnight at the cabana The Cabana Vârful Ciucaș is the standard refuge for two-day Ciucaș crossings. This trip never spends a night - the workout window is one afternoon, the photo cluster doesn’t extend past dusk.
- absent Brașov The usual Bran-valley comfort base sits 30 km N over the ridge - skipped on this trip, which stays entirely on the Prahova flank.
- absent Bran-Moieciu side The usual Bran-valley comfort base sits 30 km N over the ridge - skipped on this trip, which stays entirely on the Prahova flank.
A focused one-objective day on the Ciucaș - climb out of Cheia, turn just below the summit, drop back. The first post-lockdown outing reads as an appetite check, not a campaign.
