Mallorca

Eight days, 478 photos, one full-island circuit

23 - 30 July 2017

Read from 478 photo timestamps anchored at the S'Arenal / Can Pastilla beach corridor, with a single full-island circuit day on Wed Jul 26.

Eight days on Mallorca at a beach base on the south edge of Palma Bay, and one enormous day in the middle that doesn’t look like the rest of the trip at all: a full-island car tour on Wednesday that touched seventeen towns and produced 321 photos, the densest single day of the year so far. Seven of the eight days run on pure beach-base time - late mornings, short afternoon walks, the camera in a bag. Wednesday is the centerpiece: a clockwise loop through Pollença, the Tramuntana coast at Valldemossa, Deià, Sóller and Fornalutx, and the southern coves at Cala Egos, Santanyí and Campos. The shape of the week is simply beach, beach, beach, circle the island, beach, beach, beach, fly home.

The route is a clean clockwise loop - north out of S’Arenal to Pollença, west across the Tramuntana on the coast road through Deià and Valldemossa, then down to the south shore for a long late-afternoon at Cala Egos, the trip’s southernmost cove, and home to the lodging well after dark. It’s the densest single day of any 2017 trip - Barcelona’s big Sunday needed a whole 1,000-photo week to build to it; this was one day of concentrated lightning.

A long way in - an early-morning Frankfurt layover, then Palma by mid-afternoon. The last frame of the day comes at dusk, the only evening shot: the first dinner and sunset at the lodging, the holiday officially begun.

A short afternoon window and nothing else - the unmistakable shape of a beach day. Morning on the sand with the phone away, a busy little midday burst over lunch or a town walk, then back to the sand. The afternoon cluster runs dense enough to suggest a long lunch somewhere worth photographing.

The day the trip swung wide - thirteen hours, seventeen towns, a quarter of the island under the wheels. A morning arc north through Pollença, Port de Pollença, Muro and Ca’n Picafort; the Tramuntana coast at midday through Fornalutx, Sóller, Deià, Valldemossa, Banyalbufar and Esporles; a cross-island run in the afternoon through Petra and Llucmajor; and the southern coast late, with a long stop at Cala Egos for what looks like a swim or a late lunch, then Santanyí and Campos and home well after dark. One day that did the work of a road trip.

The slowest day of the whole trip - everything compressed into a single minute around lunch and then silence. After Wednesday’s marathon this reads as exactly what it was: a deliberate day of doing nothing at all.

evening Oberding cluster

A half-day in Palma, then the long way home - an evening cluster at Oberding, the little town beside Munich’s airport, mirroring the inbound route. The final frame is a late layover shot at Munich before the last connection.

  1. South Mallorca beach base ~10% Palma Bay resort coast, mainstream
  2. Wed circuit · Tramuntana ~30% well-trafficked but spread out
  3. Wed circuit · north Mallorca ~40% Pollença + Muro less Insta-typical
  4. Wed circuit · south coves ~60% Cala Egos is a smaller-known cove

The Wed circuit’s value isn’t off-path discovery — it’s the density of contact: 17 named places in one day produces a more complete portrait of Mallorca than 7 days at the resort alone would have. The 47-photo Cala Egos cluster also reads as a time-of-day off-path note — an evening visit at a midday-light beach.

  1. absent Cap de Formentor (the iconic lighthouse cape) The Wed circuit hit Port de Pollença but no Formentor coord — the natural N extension was declined. Either time-budgeted or never planned.
  2. absent Palma Cathedral (La Seu) The base sits in metro Palma and the city zone was crossed on several days, but there’s no real dwell at the cathedral itself - never the destination, only the surroundings.
  3. absent Bellver Castle Palma’s hilltop fortress — no clear dwell.
  4. absent Serra de Tramuntana hiking trails (GR-221) The Wed circuit drove the Tramuntana coast but didn’t walk it. No hike clusters at Estellencs or Banyalbufar walking paths.
  5. absent Sant Elm / Dragonera island The west-tip Mallorca destination, never visited.
  6. absent Cabrera island The small archipelago off the south coast, never reached.

A resort-base trip with one well-planned overview day. The user got a tasting of Mallorca in 24 hours of driving — enough to know which corners to return to — without committing to any one corner for a second day. Breadth over depth for the inland; depth at one base for the days at home.
