WebSummit week in Lisbon, bracketed by tourist days
2 - 11 November 2019
Read from 914 photo timestamps and coord clusters across central Lisbon, Parque das Nações (MEO Arena), and Belém. The Mon-Thu centroid shift to the arena is the trip's signature; an earlier read missed it and put the signature on the Sunday photo peak.
The argument
A Saturday flight in, ten days at a single Lisbon anchor, a Monday flight home - and the reason for the dates is WebSummit 2019, the annual tech conference held at the MEO Arena from Mon Nov 4 to Thu Nov 7. The photo centroid shifts 5 - 7 km north-east from central Lisbon to the Parque das Nações arena for exactly those four weekdays, then returns to the old town for the bracketing tourist days. The biggest single photo day is Sunday Nov 3, a long central walk through Alfama, the Baixa, Chiado and Bairro Alto that ends at LX Factory after dark - but Sunday is the day before the conference opens, not the trip’s reason. The real Belém day is Friday Nov 8, immediately after the conference closes. The shape is conference-week-with-tourist-bookends, not a city break that happened to coincide.

The signature
WebSummit 2019 - four days at the MEO Arena
The trip's reason for being. WebSummit ran Mon Nov 4 - Thu Nov 7 at the MEO Arena (Altice Arena) in Parque das Nações, and the photos confirm it cleanly: the daily centroid jumps 5 - 7 km north-east out of central Lisbon to the arena for exactly those four weekdays, then snaps back to the old town for the bracketing days. The conference week is the spine; the Alfama, Belém and LX Factory days hang off either end.

Centroid shift
5 - 7 km NE from central Lisbon to Parque das Nações on Mon-Thu, then back to the old town for the weekend
The 14:00 peak is consistent with conference-floor breaks (lunch and the early-afternoon keynote slot). The Mon-Thu weekday pattern itself is the giveaway - early November is not when you visit Lisbon as a tourist, and the four bracketing tourist days (Sat-Sun before, Fri-Sat after) are a city break wrapped around the conference, not the other way around.

An early Saturday flight, and almost the whole day spent in the Alfama - the castle of São Jorge, the Sé cathedral, the tangle of lanes below. We dropped the bags and went straight out to walk it, the way you do when a city pulls you in on landing.

The photo-densest day of the trip - a thorough central-Lisbon sweep on the Sunday before WebSummit opens. A morning in the Alfama and around the Sé, midday down in the Baixa and on Praça do Comércio, the afternoon climbing through Chiado and Bairro Alto, then Cais do Sodré and the Time Out Market - and a long Sunday-evening push west along the river into the LX Factory quarter as the light went. The leg-level photo standout; the trip’s signature lives on the four conference days that follow.

Day one of WebSummit. Almost the entire day at the MEO Arena in Parque das Nações - the centroid sits 5 - 7 km north-east of central Lisbon, on the arena itself. The 14:00 peak hits the early-afternoon keynote slot. Whatever the Apple Photos label said about an Oceanário day was the conference next door.

Second day of the conference. Photo count drops as the novelty wears off but the centroid stays out at the arena - the camera comes out for the morning arrival, a couple of talks, and an evening session, not much else.

The quietest day of the trip - barely a photo. Day three of WebSummit, by which point the badge is doing the work and the camera stays in the bag. The centroid drifts a little back toward the centre, but this is still a conference day, not a touring one.

Closing day of WebSummit. The morning and early afternoon still at the arena, then the evening cluster (the 19:00 hour, 8 photos) is back in the Alfama - the conference releases and the city resumes. The hinge between the conference week and the bracketing tourist days that follow.

The real Belém day - not Sunday, as an earlier read had it. A start around Mouraria and the Sé, then the run out west: Belém Tower as a golden-hour silhouette, the Padrão dos Descobrimentos, and the Jerónimos Monastery seen from outside rather than within. The kind of late-afternoon-into-dusk Belém visit that the light rewards.

Not the cross-river Almada day an earlier read guessed. A short Belém wrap-up around midday, then east to LX Factory for the afternoon - the creative-industry block under the bridge in Alcântara, and the trip’s single largest cluster outside the Alfama. A north-Lisbon detour late, then back to the Alfama for the evening. The river-edge frames that geocode as Almada are really just the Belém Tower waterfront; the cross-Tagus trip never happened.

The Mon-Thu Parque das Nações cluster is not an off-path tourist find - it’s the WebSummit venue. Reading it as a quirky ‘modern Lisbon’ choice would misread the trip. Everything central tags simply as Lisbon, so a name search blurs the real structure: only clustering by coord, not by label, surfaces both the arena week and the LX Factory afternoon.

WebSummit fixed the dates and the venue; the tourist days bracket the conference rather than the other way around. That explains the day-trip absences: Sintra, Cascais, Évora, Setúbal all skipped because the four mid-week conference days take the time a day-trip culture would want. The bracketing weekend days went to central Lisbon, Belém and LX Factory because they are walkable from the city anchor and don’t require the early-morning train a Sintra day would.
