Lisbon

Ten days, 914 photos, peak-rest-peak symmetry

2 - 11 November 2019

Read from 914 photo timestamps and coord clusters across central Lisbon, Parque das Nações, and Belém — corrected from an earlier locality-only reading that miscalled the cross-river and Belém days.

A Saturday flight in, ten days at a single Lisbon anchor, a Monday flight home - almost every photo taken inside the city itself. The trip has a clean peak-rest-peak symmetry: a busy first half, a deliberately quiet three-day middle that reads like a working stay, and a busy second half that mirrors the first. The big day is Sunday, a long central walk through Alfama, the Baixa, Chiado and Bairro Alto that ends at LX Factory after dark. The real Belém day is the following Friday, not Sunday - a correction to an earlier misread of the locality tags.

An early Saturday flight, and almost the whole day spent in the Alfama - the castle of São Jorge, the Sé cathedral, the tangle of lanes below. We dropped the bags and went straight out to walk it, the way you do when a city pulls you in on landing.

The biggest day of the trip, and a thorough central-Lisbon walk rather than the Belém day an earlier read assumed. A morning in the Alfama and around the Sé, midday down in the Baixa and on Praça do Comércio, the afternoon climbing through Chiado and Bairro Alto, then Cais do Sodré and the Time Out Market - and a long Sunday-evening push west along the river into the LX Factory quarter as the light went.

Almost the entire day at Parque das Nações - the Expo ‘98 grounds on the modern eastern riverfront, with a long stretch around the Oceanário and the Pavilion of Knowledge. A clean counterweight to Sunday: the glass-and-water modern city the day after the medieval one.

The first of three quiet days, and they all cluster out toward the Parque das Nações and Olivais side of the city rather than the centre - it reads as a partial relocation to that end of town, a settling-in rather than a sightseeing stretch.

The quietest day of the whole trip - barely a photo all day. By 2019 Lisbon was already a working-from-anywhere hub, and this stretch has exactly that shape: a day that was lived, not toured.

The third quiet day, ending with a late return to the Alfama after the day spent out east. The whole midweek stretch is a small fraction of the trip’s photos across nearly a third of its days - the rest in the peak-rest-peak.

The real Belém day - not Sunday, as an earlier read had it. A start around Mouraria and the Sé, then the run out west: Belém Tower as a golden-hour silhouette, the Padrão dos Descobrimentos, and the Jerónimos Monastery seen from outside rather than within. The kind of late-afternoon-into-dusk Belém visit that the light rewards.

Not the cross-river Almada day an earlier read guessed. A short Belém wrap-up around midday, then east to LX Factory for the afternoon - the creative-industry block under the bridge in Alcântara, and the trip’s single largest cluster outside the Alfama. A north-Lisbon detour late, then back to the Alfama for the evening. The river-edge frames that geocode as Almada are really just the Belém Tower waterfront; the cross-Tagus trip never happened.

The final Sunday, and the trip is plainly winding down - the camera comes out far less, the city already half let go of.

A handful of frames at Loures, the suburb on the road out to the airport - checkout and transit, the trip ending on the flight home.

  1. Lisbon center (Baixa/Chiado/Alfama) ~0% top-decile European tourist
  2. Belém district (Fri-Sat) ~0% canonical
  3. Parque das Nações ★ ~40% modern eastern riverfront — 104 photos across 4 days, skipped by most short city breaks
  4. LX Factory ★ ~30% Alcântara creative block — 121 photos on a single Saturday afternoon
  5. Loures (departure transit) ~30% airport-side suburb

The districts hide inside the data here. Everything central tags simply as Lisbon, so a name search blurs the real structure. An earlier read called Saturday the cross-river Almada day with a morning at Cristo Rei; in fact Belém was Friday evening into Saturday morning, Cristo Rei was never visited at all, and Saturday’s big afternoon cluster was LX Factory. The same lesson as Prague: only clustering by place, not by label, surfaces what the trip actually did inside the city.

  1. absent Sintra (Pena Palace + historic centre) Coord-checked: 0 photos in 2 km. The canonical Lisbon day-trip — genuinely surprising skip for a 10-day stay.
  2. absent Cascais / Estoril coast Coord-checked: 0 photos at both. The Atlantic-coast satellite towns were skipped.
  3. absent Almada / Cristo Rei Not a photo at the great statue or at the Cacilhas ferry terminal. The cross-Tagus excursion simply never happened; the few Almada-tagged frames are really just the Belém waterfront, mislabelled.
  4. absent Évora / Setúbal day trips 0 photos at both. Out of scope for this trip’s design.
  5. absent Miradouro Senhora do Monte + Feira da Ladra flea market 0 photos at both — surprising given they sit ~150 m from the Castelo São Jorge anchor.
  6. absent MAAT (Museu de Arte Arquitetura e Tecnologia) in Belém 0 photos at the building — the user did Belém Tower + Padrão but skipped the modern museum.
  7. absent Estádio da Luz / José Alvalade 0 photos at both stadium coords. No matches.

This trip committed to Lisbon itself - all of it, the Parque das Nações and LX Factory and Belém as well as the old centre - rather than treating the city as a launchpad into Portugal’s day-trip-rich surroundings. Sintra’s absence is the loudest choice in the data: almost every ten-day Lisbon stay includes it, and this one simply didn’t.
