Kefalonia

Eight days, 1,260 photos, all four island regions

30 August - 6 September 2023

Read from 1,260 photo timestamps spread across the Sami, Pylaros, Erisos, Paliki and Argostoli municipal units, with two logged coastal hikes (Fteri Beach descent, Paralia Dafnoudi approach) and a dense Aug 31 cluster at Myrtos + Assos that defines the trip.

Eight days on Kefalonia in the Greek Ionian Islands, late August into early September 2023. The frames spread right across the island - the Sami coast where we stayed, the capital at Argostoli, the northern peninsulas of Pylaros and Erisos, the under-visited Paliki side in the west. The mode is a roving base: Sami holds the nights, but a different corner takes the day. The biggest day was the north - the Myrtos Beach and Assos country, Kefalonia’s signature image - and it came on Day 2 rather than late in the trip.

Greek-domestic routing - EFL → ATH → OTP via Athens. Athens is the standard hub out of any Greek island and the deliberate connection for this trip; the rare-hub flag fires because Athens does not appear often elsewhere in the dataset, not because the routing was unusual for Kefalonia.

Sami arrival

Landing into Kefalonia airport (EFL) south of Argostoli, then a slow lap toward base - a stop in Argostoli town, a brief detour up to the Castle of Saint George above the village of Razata, then over the spine of the island to Sami by lunch. An afternoon and evening on the Sami coast - the harbour and the cove just past the headland that opens onto Antisamos. The shape of an orientation drive before settling in.

Myrtos + Assos

The peak of the whole trip, on Day 2. North to the Myrtos Beach viewpoint - the white-cliff turquoise sweep that is Kefalonia’s signature image - the morning spent at the overlook and the descent to the sand, then on round the headland to Assos, the Venetian castle on a near-island connected by a thin neck of land. Going straight to the headline geography this early was a deliberate choice.

Zola + Paliki

The widest day of the trip. A morning hike down from Zola to Fteri Beach, the steep coastal descent to a near-inaccessible cove (one of the two logged hikes), then on across the central ridge to the quiet Paliki peninsula in the west - Petani Beach above on the cliffs and Lixouri for the early evening. Closes with a last pass through Pylaros on the way home.

Fiskardo + Dafnoudi

A return to the north end of the island - up the east-coast road through the Erisos hills, Fiskardo’s picturesque harbour at the island’s tip, and a short late-afternoon hike from Antipata down to Paralia Dafnoudi, the secluded pebble cove tucked between Fiskardo and Assos. The part of the island worth seeing twice.

A Sami-only day, the quietest of the trip - the harbour town itself and a slow afternoon at Antisamos Beach just round the headland. A genuine rest from the driving.

A last wide goodbye-lap. A second pass at Myrtos, then south down the spine to the Agios Gerasimos Monastery in the Omala valley and the Robola wine villages around Valsamata, then back to Sami for the final night.

Argostoli

A last Kefalonia morning around Argostoli, then the flight via Athens home - the final frames falling near Athens airport.

  1. Kefalonia (overall) ~30% less-mainstream than Santorini · Mykonos
  2. Sami + Argostoli ~20% the two main settlements
  3. Pylaros + Erisos N coast ~20% Myrtos + Assos are top-decile within Greece
  4. Paliki W peninsula ~55% the under-visited side of the island

The Paliki peninsula is the off-path move. Most Kefalonia visitors stay on the east and north - the trip spent two days on the west (Sep 1 + Sep 3), reaching Petani Beach and the south Paliki coast that don’t typically appear in the canonical Kefalonia photo set.

  1. absent Ithaka Visible from Kefalonia’s east coast - the mythical Odysseus-island, reachable by short ferry. 0 photos.
  2. absent Zakynthos Adjacent Ionian island with the famous shipwreck-beach (Navagio) - not visited. The trip stayed scoped to one island.
  3. absent Lefkada Adjacent Ionian island, reachable via ferry + Lefkada bridge - not visited.
  4. absent Drogarati Cave The other named Sami-area cave site, paired with Melissani in most itineraries - no dwell cluster. Melissani was visited but Drogarati was not.
  5. absent Mount Ainos National Park The island’s central highland and 1,628 m summit - no photo cluster at the park interior, and neither logged hike went there. The most notable miss of the trip.
  6. absent Skala Southeast resort town - 0 photos. The only quadrant of the island that was skipped.
  7. absent Poros Southeast resort town and ferry port - 0 photos. Paired with Skala as the unvisited corner.

A roving island stay - every corner of the main island covered in eight days except the southeast resort coast at Skala and Poros, and the adjacent Ionian neighbours skipped. The interior Mount Ainos is the more notable miss: the island’s highest point sat half an hour from the lodging, and the two logged hikes both ran to the coast (Fteri, Dafnoudi) rather than the summit.
