Arrival and a first loose lap of the island - Sami, then on to Argostoli and the central villages, the shape of an orientation drive after dropping the bags.
Eight days, 1,260 photos, all four island regions
Read from 1,260 photo timestamps distributed evenly across Sami + Argostoli + Pylaros + Erisos + Paliki municipal units.
Eight days on Kefalonia in the Greek Ionian Islands, late August into early September 2023, with the frames spread right across the island - the Sami coast where we stayed, the capital at Argostoli, the northern peninsulas of Pylaros and Erisos, the under-visited Paliki side in the west. The mode is a roving base: Sami is the anchor but a different corner went out most days. The biggest day was the north, the famous Myrtos beach and Assos castle country, not the lodging side - and unusually it came on day two.
The trip's photo peak hit on Day 2 — Pylaros + Erisos on the N peninsula, Kefalonia's signature geography.
The geometry suggests the canonical ’top of Kefalonia’ route — Myrtos beach viewpoint + Assos castle climb + Fiskardo port + lodging drive back to Sami. Photographers’ favorite geometry, on Day 2 rather than late in the trip.
Arrival and a first loose lap of the island - Sami, then on to Argostoli and the central villages, the shape of an orientation drive after dropping the bags.
The peak of the whole trip, and it came on day two - the northern peninsulas, almost certainly the Assos castle headland and the white-cliff turquoise sweep of Myrtos beach, Kefalonia’s signature image. Going straight to the headline geography this early was a deliberate choice.
The widest day - seven corners in one, the trip’s only run out to the quiet Paliki peninsula in the west plus a second pass at Pylaros. A deliberate cover-as-much-as-you-can day.
A return to the north, almost certainly the picturesque port of Fiskardo and the Venetian-fort village of Assos - the part of the island worth seeing twice.
A second day on the quiet Paliki side, paired with the capital - the Argostoli waterfront on the west coast.
A Sami-only day, the quietest of the trip - a genuine rest from all the driving around the island.
A last wide goodbye-lap of the island, seven small villages strung together the day before leaving.
A last Kefalonia morning around Argostoli and Lassi, then the flight via Athens home - the final frames falling near the Athens airport.
The Paliki peninsula is the off-path move. Most Kefalonia visitors stay on the E + N — the user spent 2 days on the W (Sep 1 + Sep 3), reaching localities that don’t typically appear in the canonical Kefalonia photo set.
A roving island stay — every corner of the main island covered in 8 days, but the adjacent Ionian neighbours skipped. The user came for Kefalonia specifically, not for an Ionian island-hop. The interior Mount Ainos is the more notable miss — the island’s highest point sat 30 minutes from the lodging.
