Five days, 849 photos, a Sultanahmet + Beyoğlu + Bağdat Caddesi pass

23 - 27 October 2024

Read from 849 photo timestamps clustered against the named Sultanahmet, Beyoğlu, Eminönü and Kadıköy coords, with the Sunday Bağdat Caddesi walk traced from a clean east-bound coord line on the Asian side.

Five late-October days from a single Istanbul base. The energy concentrated into two full walking days at the heart of the trip: a Thursday Old City + Bosphorus crossing that ran Grand Bazaar / Eminönü / Süleymaniye in the morning and then ferried over to Kadıköy and Moda for the afternoon, and a Friday Sultanahmet day with the Blue Mosque, Topkapı at midday, and Hagia Sophia drawing a long late-afternoon dwell. Beyoğlu - Galata, Istiklal, Taksim - filled Saturday. The trip closed with a long Sunday Bağdat Caddesi walk east through the Asian-side neighbourhoods before the airport.

Friday 25 October - the Sultanahmet day

The trip's photo-anchor and its single longest dwell. Blue Mosque mid-morning, Topkapı at midday, and the Hagia Sophia interior in late afternoon - the biggest single coord cluster of the whole trip lands at Hagia Sophia between 17:00 and 18:00.

The Old City four-in-one is the canonical Istanbul day, but the actual sequence ran longer than ‘one tight morning’. The morning opened at the Blue Mosque, the midday went into Topkapı, and the longest single dwell was the late-afternoon Hagia Sophia interior - 67 photos in the 17:00 hour alone. The Basilica Cistern entry is visible in the 10:45 cluster between the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia coords, but with GPS unreliable underground the cistern’s photo signature folds into the surrounding Sultanahmet square.

In via the new airport on the European side, transferred to a base in the old-city north around Eminönü, then a first evening walk that ended at the Spice Bazaar after eight. A half-day arrival shape - the airport run, settling in, one walk through the neighbourhood before dark.

The day with the widest geography. Grand Bazaar opening at 10:14, then Eminönü and a long stop at the Süleymaniye Mosque (the day’s coord peak), then a midday ferry across the Bosphorus to spend the afternoon in Kadıköy and Moda. Return ferry around 17:45 - a 12-minute crossing visible in the coords as a 5 km hop from the Asian shore to Karaköy - then a long walk back up through Beyoğlu in the early evening. The Old City in the morning, the Asian side by mid-afternoon, Beyoğlu at dusk.

The Sultanahmet day. Blue Mosque at 10:42, Topkapı at 11:03 and through midday, then back across the Sultanahmet square in the afternoon for the second Blue Mosque pass at 16:25-16:35 (the day’s mosque-interior cluster), and finally Hagia Sophia from 17:00 until almost dark. Four Old City interiors inside one tight 800-metre walk - but spread across a full day, with the Hagia Sophia evening drawing the trip’s single largest coord cluster.

Up over the Golden Horn into Beyoğlu - Karaköy and the Galata Tower in the morning, then the long climb of Istiklal Caddesi to Taksim at midday, then back down through Cihangir and across to the Eminönü waterfront for an evening Spice Bazaar return. A looser, more wandering day after Friday’s headline interiors.

A second Asian-side day folded into the morning before the flight. From Üsküdar pier around 10:30 down to Kadıköy and then east along Bağdat Caddesi - the Asian-side shopping spine - through Caddebostan, Suadiye and Bostancı, the coords moving cleanly east from 11:00 to 14:00 over about 5 km. Back across to the Old City briefly at 15:30, then the run out to the airport for the 18:30 IST gate.

  1. Sultanahmet old city ~0% top-decile global tourist density
  2. Beyoğlu / Galata / Taksim ~5% Istiklal + Galata Tower are canonical
  3. Grand Bazaar / Süleymaniye / Eminönü ~5% headline old-city axis
  4. Kadıköy / Moda ~30% Asian side, lower visitor density than the European old city
  5. Bağdat Caddesi (Caddebostan / Suadiye / Bostancı) ~55% Asian-side residential / shopping spine, essentially zero foreign-tourist presence

The Sultanahmet headline day is the standard Istanbul-in-a-day playbook. The two quieter signals are the Thursday Bosphorus crossing to Kadıköy / Moda and the Sunday Bağdat Caddesi walk - both well off the Old City + Beyoğlu axis that most short-stay visitors stay inside.

  1. absent Chora Church (Kariye Camii) The Byzantine mosaics, barely a kilometre west of the Beyoğlu walk and not a single photo there. A clean miss.
  2. absent Dolmabahçe Palace The Bosphorus north-shore palace - zero photos. The trip stayed on the Old City + Galata + Kadıköy triangle and never reached the upper-Bosphorus shoreline.
  3. absent Beşiktaş + Ortaköy The Bosphorus north-shore waterfront beyond Dolmabahçe - zero photos. The Beyoğlu day stopped at Taksim and turned back rather than continuing north along the European Bosphorus.
  4. absent Maiden's Tower The iconic offshore tower at the Üsküdar shoreline - zero photos. The Sunday morning passed through Üsküdar pier briefly but did not stop at the tower view.
  5. absent Üsküdar mosque cluster The Mihrimah Sultan / Yeni Valide / Şemsi Pasha cluster on the Asian shore. The Asian-side time went to Kadıköy + Moda and to the Bağdat Caddesi walk - Üsküdar itself was only a brief pier transit on Thursday and Sunday.
  6. absent Princes' Islands The canonical day-ferry from Istanbul - Büyükada, Heybeliada. Zero photos · no ferry chord in the timestamps.
  7. absent Hagia Sophia + Topkapı interior deep dwell The Hagia Sophia coord drew 141 photos and Topkapı 74, but spread across a single Friday with three other interiors in the same day. A pass-through visit, not a half-day-per-monument deep visit.

A canonical three-axis Istanbul - Sultanahmet, Beyoğlu, Kadıköy + Bağdat Caddesi - bracketed by arrival and departure. The Bosphorus palaces, Chora, Maiden’s Tower and the Princes’ Islands are the clean absences. Folding the Sultanahmet four into one day is efficient by design; the price is that none of them gets a long, slow visit.
