Iceland, Vestmannaeyjar

Ten days, 1,240 photos, five hikes to an active eruption and a four-hill day on Heimaey

13 - 22 May 2021

Read from 1,240 photo timestamps and 9 logged hikes across Reykjanes and the Westman Islands, joined to the public March 2021 Geldingadalsgos eruption record.

Flew Bucharest to Frankfurt to Keflavík on 13 May, settled on the Reykjanes peninsula out of a Sandgerði base, and on 14 May hiked out to the live Fagradalsfjall lava field for the first time. The eruption had opened on March 19, 2021 and was still flowing eight weeks on, and we ended up coming back to the vent six separate times across nine days - five with the watch running, one untracked night walk on 16 May that left at 22:19 and finished at 01:35. Three of the tracked hikes ran by day, two through the small hours, finishing at 01:42 and 02:23 in the morning. Mid-trip we ferried out to Vestmannaeyjar for three days, the archipelago the prior two Iceland trips had both skipped, and on 18 May hiked four separate Heimaey hills in a single day - Heimaklettur, Helgafell, Eldfell and Dalfjall, in that order. Then back to Reykjanes for two more visits to the eruption, and home via Frankfurt. 260 photos on May 18 is the photo-densest day, but the eruption is what the trip was for.

Six visits to an active eruption, two of them past midnight

Geldingadalsgos was still flowing eight weeks after it opened on March 19. We hiked out to the lava field six times across nine days - three by day, two through the small hours with the watch running, and one untracked night walk between them - the vent lighting its own path.

Total tracked
41.05 km · 1,583 m ascent across 5 tracked hikes

All visits start and end at the same Grindavík-side trailhead, the canonical approach to the Geldingadalsgos vent. The night ones are not a stunt. A fresh, active eruption is genuinely more visible in the dark, and the two tracked night hikes finished at 01:42 and 02:23 Iceland local. Between them sits a third night visit on 16 May with no workout recorded - same trailhead, same lava field, 65 photos at the vent between 23:21 and 01:35. Three of the five tracked hikes passed 9 km and 300 m of ascent. The same trail, walked six different ways.

The May 15-16 sequence - a 4.66 km morning loop to the lava field, a 9.21 km night hike that left at 21:04 and finished at 01:42 the next morning, and then a third untracked walk out to the vent the very next night, 22:19 to 01:35. Three visits to the same active vent inside thirty-three hours.

  • 13 May · the long arrival via Frankfurt, just a handful of frames before settling at the Sandgerði base
  • 14 May · ★ the first eruption hike, 9.39 km and 361 m of ascent from the Grindavík approach. The whole reason for the early part of the trip.
  • 15 May · two tracked hikes to the same trailhead - 4.66 km in the morning, then a 9.21 km night hike that left at 21:04 and finished at 01:42 the next morning
  • 16 May · a quiet Sandgerði afternoon, then back out to the vent at 22:19 without the watch - 65 frames at the lava field between 23:21 and 01:35, returning to the trailhead in the small hours

May 18 · 260 photos · four separate Heimaey hills in one day. Heimaklettur in the morning, the steep harbour cliff with its chains and ladders, 289 m of ascent in 2.68 km. Then Helgafell and Eldfell, the two volcanoes that bracket the town - Eldfell the 1973 cone that buried half the harbour, Helgafell the older one south of it. Then Dalfjall in the late afternoon. Mid-May is the very edge of puffin season.

  • 17 May · the crossing day - a Reykjanes morning, the midday ferry from Landeyjahöfn, an afternoon finding the island on foot from Heimaey town out to the south-coast cliffs above Stórhöfði
  • 18 May · ★★ the four-hill day - Heimaklettur, Helgafell, Eldfell, Dalfjall, in that order, four tracked hikes between 10:23 and 19:19
  • 19 May · the return ferry, then a south-coast detour to Seljalandsfoss and a roadside Eyjafjöll stop, then Hvolsvöllur, then a Þingvallavatn-area stop on the way back to Reykjavík for an evening in the capital before returning to the Sandgerði base

  1. Reykjanes peninsula ~30% well-photographed but not Reykjavik-dense
  2. Fagradalsfjall eruption ~0% most-photographed Icelandic event of 2021
  3. Vestmannaeyjar (May) ~30% less-touristed than Reykjavik / Mývatn

The geographic off-path score is uninteresting. The richer reading is gap-fill + singular event. The two prior Iceland trips both skipped Vestmannaeyjar; this one targets it specifically, plus the active volcano. Three Iceland trips in ten months is our most-returned-to country pattern, and the third was the most pointed of them.

  1. absent The Ring Road interior Not visited this time. We had done it less than a year before, in summer 2020.
  2. absent West Fjords Iceland’s NW peninsula, our most-skipped Iceland region across all four 2020-2021 visits.
  3. absent Snæfellsnes peninsula Both prior Iceland trips covered it. This one deliberately avoided the repeat.
  4. absent Reynisfjara The black-sand beach east of Vík, the canonical south-coast stop. The May 19 detour from the ferry stopped at Seljalandsfoss and turned back north toward Hvolsvöllur. No photo coord at Reynisfjara this trip.
  5. absent Dyrhólaey The south-coast headland and arch east of Vík. The May 19 detour did not push that far east; no photo coord at Dyrhólaey.
  6. absent Skógafoss The 60 m waterfall a quarter-hour east of Seljalandsfoss on Route 1. The May 19 detour stopped at Seljalandsfoss only and headed back north; no photo coord at Skógafoss.
  7. absent Hallgrímskirkja interior Reykjavík’s hilltop church, the city’s canonical indoor stop. Touched Reykjavík on May 19 evening but no church interior dwell cluster - a transit pass-through, not a sightseeing arm.
  8. absent National Museum of Iceland The Suðurgata museum is the other canonical Reykjavík indoor visit. No interior dwell cluster on the May 19 evening pass through the city.
  9. absent Eldheimar Museum interior The 1973 buried-town museum is the canonical Heimaey indoor visit. No specific coord cluster surfaces on May 18, the four-hill day - we spent that day on the hills instead.

A deliberately narrow Iceland trip. Fill the Vestmannaeyjar gap, see the Fagradalsfjall eruption six times, hike four Heimaey hills in a day. The skipped regions are all places the prior trips already covered, plus the always-skipped West Fjords. Even the canonical south-coast Big Three (Seljalandsfoss-Skógafoss-Reynisfjara) only got the first one.
