Ten days, 1,240 photos, the Fagradalsfjall eruption + a Westman Islands gap-fill
13 - 22 May 2021
Read from 1,240 photo timestamps and 9 logged walks/hikes across Reykjanes peninsula and the Westman Islands, plus the public March 2021 eruption record.
The argument
Flew Bucharest → Frankfurt → Keflavík on 13 May, settled on the Reykjanes peninsula with a Sandgerði base, and on 14 May walked the canonical 11.3 km / 369 m Fagradalsfjall trail from Grindavík — the eruption that began March 19, 2021 was still flowing. Mid-trip ferried to Vestmannaeyjar for 3 days (the archipelago the prior two Iceland trips both skipped), then back to Reykjanes and a Reykjavik arm. 260 photos on May 18 at Heimaey — the trip’s peak.

The May 14 walk from Grindavík to the active lava field. 11.3 km and 369 m matches the canonical Trail A exactly.
13 May · the long arrival via Frankfurt, just a handful of frames before the base
14 May · ★ the eruption walk - out from Grindavík to the live Fagradalsfjall lava field, the trip’s whole reason for the early part
15 May · the big Reykjanes day, a wide peninsula sweep most likely taking in the lighthouse and the Bridge Between Continents
16 May · a lighter day around Reykjanesbær before the ferry

May 18 at Heimaey · 260 photos — the trip’s peak. Two hikes consistent with the Heimaklettur summit + a Stórhöfði-area walk. Mid-May is early puffin season.
17 May · the crossing day - a Reykjanes morning, the midday ferry from Landeyjahöfn, an afternoon finding the island
18 May · ★★ the peak of the trip - a full day on Heimaey, two hikes that read as the Heimaklettur summit and a Stórhöfði-area walk in early puffin season
19 May · the return ferry, then on through Hvolsvöllur to an evening in Reykjavik

The geographic score is uninteresting. The richer reading is gap-fill: the user’s two prior Iceland trips both skipped Vestmannaeyjar; this one targets it specifically, plus the active volcano. Three Iceland trips in 10 months is our most-returned-to country pattern.

absentThe Ring Road interiorNot visited this time — the user did it less than a year prior in summer 2020.
absentWest FjordsIceland’s NW peninsula, our most-skipped Iceland region across all four 2020-2021 visits.
absentSnæfellsnes peninsulaBoth prior Iceland trips covered it; this one deliberately avoided the repeat.
absentReykjavik museumsTouched the city on May 19 evening but no interior dwell cluster — a transit pass-through, not a sightseeing arm.
absentHeimaklettur summit confirmationThe May 18 5.9 km hike’s profile is consistent with the 283 m Heimaklettur ascent but the data doesn’t prove it — the coord trace shows the island, not the specific peak.
absentEldheimar Museum interiorThe 1973 buried-town museum is the canonical Heimaey indoor visit; no specific coord cluster surfaces.
A deliberately narrow Iceland trip — fill the Vestmannaeyjar gap, see the Fagradalsfjall eruption. The user’s third Iceland visit in 10 months targets specific photographic gaps rather than re-touring the Ring Road. The skipped regions are all places the prior trips already covered, plus the always-skipped West Fjords.

Standing next to an erupting volcano is surreal. Words, photos and videos don't make justice to being there. Feeling all the heat and the tremor and the colors is an outstanding experience. Though, …
