The argument

Seventeen high-summer days driving from Romania across Bulgaria into mainland Greece - a tour clean across the country, Aegean to Ionian. The spine: a long stay at Velika on the Larissa coast under Mt Olympus, a Meteora day-trip, the standout Zagori villages day in the Pindos mountains, the drive over the range to Parga on the Ionian, a Lefkada island day, and the long road home through Bulgaria. After two Ionian-island trips in the prior years, this was mainland Greece instead - a slower, different register, with two quiet inland days as its real high points.

The Zagori day is the off-path signal. Greek mainland villages in Pindos NP are 50× less photographed on global indices than Meteora or Santorini. The Velika anchor sits in a quieter coastal strip than Pelion proper - most Aegean-coast itineraries from the north head to Pelion (Volos, Tsangarada). The Larissa coast choice over Pelion is a quiet move.

absent Pelion peninsula proper An earlier brief named the anchor as a Pelion-coast village; a closer check shows the base is actually Velika on the Larissa coast (Melivia municipality), well north of the Pelion peninsula. The canonical Pelion villages - Tsangarada, Makrinitsa, Damouchari, Mylopotamos - have zero photos this trip.
absent Athens Mainland Greece’s headline city. Zero photos · not on the route. Skipped, like every Athens-side draw.
absent Thessaloniki as destination Touched as transit Jul 26 (3 photos at the Evosmos suburb) but not stayed. The largest northern Greek city was a drive-pass only.
absent Vikos Gorge bottom The deepest part of Pindos NP, accessible from Monodendri side. The Aug 1 day touched Monodendri (57 photos) and walked the Vradeto-Beloi rim - the gorge viewed from above, not descended into.
absent Aristi The other half of the Zagori - the cluster at the north end of the Vikos gorge. Zero photos. The Aug 1 day stayed in the central/southern Zagori (Kapesovo, Monodendri, Kipoi) and didn’t drive the extra hour to the Papingos.

A mainland Greece trip that deliberately avoided Pelion and Athens. The Larissa coast over Pelion choice is the quiet structural move; Zagori over the more-trafficked Meteora-as-headline is the off-path move. The trip’s stance is inland over island, quiet coast over famous coast - consistent with our preference for sidestepping headline destinations.
