The argument
We flew into Frankfurt and settled at Bleichenbach, a 200-resident village in the Wetterau countryside north-east of the city. Twenty days at one address, with five day-trips fanned out from it: Rothenburg ob der Tauber on the Romantic Road by way of Wertheim am Main, the Middle Rhine castles from Oestrich-Winkel down to the Loreley at Sankt Goarshausen with a long evening in Limburg an der Lahn, a Black Forest day through Baden-Baden that crossed the border at Kehl into Strasbourg before the Schwarzwaldhochstraße scenic loop, Thuringia and the Wartburg above Eisenach paired with a Welterbeweg walk in Hainich National Park’s UNESCO beech forest, and the walled little town of Büdingen just down the road. The village days themselves are deliberately quiet - a frame or two, the slow rhythm of actually living somewhere.
