The argument

Four days in Cluj-Napoca with a Saturday slip out to Turda, mid-June 2017 - and the quietest trip of the whole year. The camera came out hard on Wednesday morning, a city walk that used up two thirds of the trip’s frames in its first six hours, and then it essentially went away. Thursday, Friday and the Turda Saturday between them barely register; Wednesday alone carries the lion’s share. Everything about the shape says this was a visit to friends or family in Cluj, with a little sightseeing fitted around the edges.

The trip’s only real photo day, and all of it a single morning. The frames build from a ten-photo 10:00 hour through a twenty-photo peak at 11:00 - the unmistakable shape of one walk through Cluj’s centre, the GPS trail running north from Piața Unirii and St. Michael’s Church up to the Cetățuia belvedere hill, then back south along the Someșul Mic riverbank. A midday lull, a nine-photo return through the old town at 13:00, then the camera goes to sleep for the afternoon and only three frames close the day around 16:00. By evening I’ve moved south-west into a Mănăștur apartment cluster - the base for the next three nights - and it stays there.

The camera all but vanishes. Four frames in a single 11:00 minute in the apartment cluster, then two isolated singles at 15:00 and 16:00 - not a walk, not an outing, just a proof-of-life scatter. A late-evening CLJ airport ping (six frames, 18:36) is likely an arrival pickup or a drop-off for someone joining or leaving the visit; it doesn’t move the trip. Filtering it out leaves nothing here but a quiet day at home in someone else’s home.

The camera reappears in mid-afternoon. Three frames around noon still tied to the Mănăștur base, then the day opens up: a four-photo 16:00 hour a couple of kilometres north-west of the apartment, a solitary 17:00 frame, and two more back near the old town at 19:00. It’s the shape of a late lunch and a slow walk back through the city, not a proper sightseeing outing. Well under a photo an active hour, and no single spot commits to being the subject.

The trip’s geographic outlier - a day out to Turda, a thirty-kilometre hop south-east. But the record of it is almost nothing: four scattered frames across the afternoon there (10:31, 11:48, 13:51, 14:32), then a pair back in Cluj at 18:59. For Salina Turda, that is implausibly thin - the neon-lit salt chambers and the underground Ferris wheel are among the most photographed indoor spots in Romania, and a proper visit typically produces dozens of frames. The GPS pings cluster around 46.58 N / 23.78 E, which is the salt mine’s approximate zone rather than Cheile Turzii (the gorge trail is ~10 km further west). Best read: the salt mine visit happened, but with phones in pockets.

With this little photographic evidence, the off-path lens is the wrong tool - there is not enough data to claim either ‘stayed on the beaten path’ or ‘went off it’. Both anchors are mainstream Romanian destinations; the high score is a global Flickr-baseline artifact, not a true off-path signal.
