Carpathian summer

Eleven days, 908 photos, the seventh return to one valley

7 - 17 July 2023

Read from 908 photo timestamps + 48.1 km recorded hiking across the Bran-Moieciu valley and adjacent Piatra Craiului / Bucegi flanks.

Eleven days at Peștera and Moeciu de Jos in Brașov county - our seventh return to this same small Carpathian valley in seven years. The rhythm was a familiar one: a quiet arrival, a big first-Sunday Bucegi traverse from Bran up through Refugiul Țigănești and Cabana Mălăiești, a Piatra Craiului day out of Fundata, a near-silent mid-week, then the biggest day of the trip on the second Sunday on the Valea Bângăleasa - Vârful Bucșa - Strunga - Bătrâna ridge above Moroeni, and finally the long way home over the Transfăgărășan rather than the fast road - a scenic exit chosen on purpose.

The drive up from Bucharest to Peștera, arriving in the evening - barely a frame, pure logistics before the trip begins.

Bran approach + Rasnov return

The trip’s first big hike. A ~20 km tracked Bucegi traverse from Bran up through Refugiul Țigănești and Șaua Țigănești to Cabana Mălăiești and down to Glăjărie, with ~1,300 m of ascent. The photo split is Rasnov-and-Bran-heavy because the trailheads and the post-hike unwind sat in the villages, but the day’s real spine is the high ridge above them.

Fundata + Dâmbovicioara

The Piatra Craiului east-flank day - a shorter ~7 km hike out of Fundata to Vârful lui Stavrat and Șaua Joaca, then the Dâmbovicioara gorge and back to the base. A lighter day after Sunday’s traverse, with the camera spread evenly across Moeciu de Jos, Peștera and Fundata.

The quiet heart of the trip - the camera fading out, two days in a row with nothing at all. Rest at the base, perhaps weather, perhaps a long unphotographed walk. These mountain trips often have their busiest days leave the fewest frames.

Moroeni + Moeciu + Bran

The biggest day of the trip - the second Sunday’s big hike. A ~20.7 km tracked traverse out of Moroeni on the south-west edge of the Bucegi - Valea Bângăleasa up to Vârful Bucșa, across Șaua Strunga to Vârful Bătrâna - with ~1,255 m of ascent. Photos split between the Moroeni trailhead, Moeciu de Jos, and a Bran stop on the way back. The trip going out at full strength the day before the drive home.

scenic drive
Peak hour
Arefu + Cârțișoara

The scenic way out - home over the Transfăgărășan, with stops at Arefu and Căpățânenii Ungureni on the southern approach and Cârțișoara at the northern end rather than taking the fast road. A deliberate detour worth roughly three extra hours of driving, and clearly worth it.

  1. Peștera + Moeciu de Jos ~35% small-village Carpathian base · less-photographed than Bran
  2. Rasnov + Bran ~5% top-decile Romanian tourist coords
  3. Piatra Craiului east flank ~25% hike-region · moderate density
  4. Moroeni / Bucegi SW ~30% less-trafficked Bucegi entry-point
  5. Transfăgărășan / Cârțișoara ~10% top-decile Romanian scenic road

The honest reading is familiarity, not off-path-ness. The user has been to this 12 km valley 7 times - the trip’s character is repetition + depth, not novelty. The Moroeni + Transfăgărășan touches are the variations the user adds on top of the base rhythm.

  1. absent Brașov city Old Town 30 km from the valley · the canonical Brașov walk (Piața Sfatului + Black Church + Strada Sforii) - touched in many prior trips but not a clear dwell this time.
  2. absent Sinaia + Bucegi N entry 12 km E of the valley - the larger Prahova-Valley ski / hike domain. The trip’s Bucegi reach was via Bran (Țigănești-Mălăiești) and Moroeni (Bucșa-Bătrâna), not Sinaia.
  3. absent Sibiu The other major Brașov-county-adjacent city - bypassed despite the Transfăgărășan exit running through Sibiu county.
  4. absent Poiana Brașov Major Brașov-area ski / hike resort - not visited.

A canonical valley-return. The user knows this micro-region better than any other in our trips and chose to revisit the same 3 villages rather than add new ones. The two Bucegi-edge hikes (Bran-Mălăiești and Moroeni-Bătrâna) plus the Transfăgărășan exit are the trip’s variation - small editorial choices on top of a well-established base rhythm.
