Fifty-four days, 600 photos, two long stays bracketed by a home pivot
8 February - 1 April 2024
Read from 600 photo timestamps, 4 walk workouts, and the anchor-cluster geometry across two cities and a 3-day home interlude.
The argument
A long Austrian winter split across two long stays - Bregenz on Lake Constance for three weeks and a quiet residential Vienna district for a month - with a three-day return home wedged between them. Hardly any walking, long stretches with no photos at all: this is a living-there trip, not a sightseeing one. One day stands clear of all the rest, the Stein am Rhein excursion into Switzerland - the single day the trip actually behaves like a trip. The string of zero-photo days tells you everything about the other fifty-three.

Feb 25 · Stein am Rhein in Switzerland - the photo peak of the whole trip and its one true day out.
9 Feb - the long drive west across the country, Vienna to Tyrol to Vorarlberg.
10-24 Feb - the slow Bregenz fortnight: a few photos most days, several with none at all, the rhythm of just living by the lake.
13 Feb - a lakeshore arc out to Lochau and Hörbranz.
15 Feb - an inland day in Dornbirn.
24 Feb - another lakeshore walk around Hard and Lochau.
25 Feb - the Stein am Rhein day-trip into Switzerland: a few hours in the medieval painted centre and a lakeshore walk on the German side.
26-27 Feb - a quiet return and a last walk along the Bregenz harbourfront.
28 Feb - the long drive back across Austria toward Vienna.

Mar 31 · the Kahlenberg hike above the city - the longest walk of the whole trip, taken on the second-to-last day.
2 Mar - landing back in Vienna and settling into the apartment for the long second half.
3 Mar - the one proper Inner-Ring day, along the Volksgarten and the edge of the Hofburg.
4-9 Mar - a quiet week of settling in, several days with no photos at all.
10 Mar - an evening indoor session at the apartment - a burst of photos, but nobody went anywhere.
15 Mar - a central Vienna day along the Stephansdom and Kärntner Straße axis.
22 Mar - Schönbrunn as a park, not a palace: a three-minute pass through the gardens, no interior.
29 Mar - a hike out at Pötzleinsdorf on the city’s edge.
31 Mar - the big one: the Kahlenberg and Leopoldsberg ridge walk high above Vienna, the trip’s longest.
1 Apr - one last short neighbourhood walk - a coffee and a stroll - before leaving.

Off-path · per zone
Vienna ½-day (6/7 district)~10%classic Innere-Stadt walk
Bregenz / Lake Constance~85%Vorarlberg is quiet; 85% inflated by residence-density not exploration
Feb 25 Stein am Rhein~30%small but well-known CH gem
Vienna NW long stay~70%residential, not Ring
Mar 15 central Vienna~5%Stephansdom axis is top-decile
Mar 22 Schönbrunn-as-park~30%park grounds, not palace interior
The high trip-level off-path number is misleading. Most of it comes from simply living somewhere, not from exploring. Spending thirty nights in a residential Vienna district and photographing your own street reads as off-path because tourists never go there - but it isn’t discovery, it’s residence. Time-of-day reframing: the Schönbrunn photos on Mar 22 are a three-minute pass in the early afternoon, against a geotagged baseline that peaks late morning at the palace tour times - a quick sweep of just the gardens is a genuinely different kind of visit. Region-aware baseline: Vorarlberg’s score would shrink considerably on a German-language baseline.

absentStephansdom interiorMar 15 photos sit on the cathedral’s plaza axis but no photos inside or on the tower terrace. Walked past, not in.

absentSalzburg, InnsbruckDrove past both on Feb 9 and Feb 28. Zero photos in either city; transit only.
absentMt Pfänder1,064 m, cable car directly from Bregenz harbor — the one Bregenz signature view. Never visited despite 20 nights at its base.

absentBodensee ferriesNever appear. The lake was lived-by-the-shore but not crossed.
Bregenz and Vienna were not visited; they were lived in. The negative-space list is long precisely because the negative space is the point. The user chose two residential bases (lakeshore + NW Vienna) and photographed life there rather than the canonical sights. Mt Pfänder above Bregenz harbor and Schönbrunn interior in Vienna are the cleanest signals of the pattern.
