Fifty-seven days, two long stays bracketed by a home pivot
7 February - 3 April 2024
Read from the photo timestamps, four tracked workouts (two hikes, two walks), and the anchor-cluster geometry across two cities, a Lake Constance excursion, and a three-day home interlude.
The argument
A long Austrian winter split across two long stays - Bregenz on Lake Constance for three weeks and a quiet residential Vienna district for a month - with a three-day return home wedged between them. Barely any walking and long stretches with no photos at all: this is a living-there trip, not a sightseeing one. February into Fasching season across Austria, but the carnival cities and the ski resorts were skipped entirely. One day stands clear of all the rest, the Stein am Rhein excursion into Switzerland - the single day the trip actually behaves like a trip. The string of zero-photo days tells you everything about the other fifty-six.

Feb 25 · Stein am Rhein in Switzerland - the photo peak of the whole trip and its one true day out.
9 Feb · the long drive west across the country, Vienna to Tyrol to Vorarlberg.
10-24 Feb · the slow Bregenz fortnight, a few photos most days and several with none at all, the rhythm of just living by the lake. Fasching weekend (Feb 10-13) passes without a single carnival frame.
13 Feb · a lakeshore arc out to Lochau and Hörbranz.
15 Feb · an inland day in Dornbirn.
24 Feb · another lakeshore walk around Hard and Lochau.
25 Feb · the Stein am Rhein day-trip into Switzerland - a few hours in the medieval painted centre and a flat Öhningen lakeshore walk on the German side.
26-27 Feb · a quiet return and a last flat walk along the Bregenz harbourfront.
28 Feb · the long drive back east across Austria, then the late-afternoon Schwechat flight home for the interlude.

10 Mar · an evening indoor session at the apartment - a burst of photos, but nobody went anywhere.
15 Mar · a central Vienna day along the Stephansdom and Kärntner Straße axis.
22 Mar · Schönbrunn as a park, not a palace - a brief pass through the gardens, no interior.
29 Mar · the Pötzleinsdorf hike on the city’s NW edge, park into forest at the lip of the Wienerwald.

Vienna half-day (6/7 district)~10%classic Innere-Stadt walk
Bregenz / Lake Constance~85%Vorarlberg is quiet; inflated by residence-density not exploration
Feb 25 Stein am Rhein~30%small but well-known CH gem
Vienna NW long stay~70%residential, not Ring
Mar 15 central Vienna~5%Stephansdom axis is top-decile
Mar 22 Schönbrunn-as-park~30%park grounds, not palace interior
The high trip-level off-path number is misleading. Most of it comes from simply living somewhere, not from exploring. Spending thirty nights in a residential Vienna district and photographing your own street reads as off-path because tourists never go there - but it isn’t discovery, it’s residence. Time-of-day reframing: the Schönbrunn photos on Mar 22 are a brief early-afternoon pass against a geotagged baseline that peaks late morning at the palace tour times - a quick sweep of just the gardens is a genuinely different kind of visit. Region-aware baseline: Vorarlberg’s score would shrink considerably on a German-language baseline. Season: Fasching peak weekend (Feb 10-13) passes the lakeshore base entirely; no carnival frames anywhere.
absentSchloss Schönbrunn interiorMar 22 photos sit in the park grounds, never inside the palace. No tour-time hours. The palace was skipped as an interior.
absentStephansdom interiorMar 15 photos sit on the cathedral’s plaza axis but no photos inside or on the tower terrace. Walked past, not in.
absentHofburgThe Mar 15 central-Vienna day and the Mar 3 Hofburg-edge cluster sit right next to it. No photos inside.

absentSchatzkammerSame Hofburg complex, same days, zero frames.
absentWiener RiesenradVienna’s single most-photographed spot, the giant Ferris wheel in the Prater. Never appears across 30 Vienna nights.

absentSalzburg, Innsbruck, KitzbühelDrove past all three on the Feb 9 and Feb 28 cross-country chords. Zero photos in any of them; transit only. February is ski-season peak in Tyrol; the trip didn’t ski.
absentFasching carnivalFeb 10-13 was the Fasching peak weekend across Austria. The Bregenz fortnight has a handful of lakeshore photos across those four days - none carnival.
absentMt Pfänder1,064 m, cable car directly from Bregenz harbour - the one Bregenz signature view. Never visited despite 20 nights at its base.
absentSäntisVisible across Lake Constance from Bregenz every day. Never crossed to.
absentAppenzell AlpsVisible across Lake Constance from Bregenz every day. Never crossed to.
absentBodensee ferriesNever appear. The lake was lived-by-the-shore but not crossed.
Bregenz and Vienna were not visited; they were lived in. The negative-space list is long precisely because the negative space is the point. We chose two residential bases (lakeshore + NW Vienna) and photographed life there rather than the canonical sights. Mt Pfänder above Bregenz harbour, Schönbrunn interior in Vienna, and the entire Fasching-into-Lent ski-resort season are the cleanest signals of the pattern.
