The argument
Six days in Athens in late September 2017, with one fourteen-hour Saronic ferry day that took in Poros, Hydra, Vlychos and Palamidas in a single outing. We based ourselves in Pagkrati, a quiet residential-but-central neighbourhood a couple of kilometres east of the Acropolis, and used it as a hinge: three days of central Athens, one slow Friday on the Vouliagmeni coast, the big Saturday ferry to Hydra, and a Sunday of central wandering with a detour into the leafy northern suburbs. The signature day is Thursday - the Acropolis through the afternoon, then the climb up Lycabettus into the sunset from its high panoramic ridge.

An earlier read of this day said we’d walked past the postcard harbour to get to Vlychos. We didn’t - the harbour itself drew sixty-odd photos, which is genuine time spent there. The real shape of the day is harbour-dwell and then the west-coast walk out to Vlychos and Palamidas, not one at the expense of the other. It’s a long, generous island day, the trip’s clear high point.

Panathenaic Stadium 17:39
A late arrival - the morning lost to the flight, the airport transfer and the Pagkrati check-in - and then a long, open evening. The first walk goes to the Panathenaic Stadium, the marble 1896 Olympic stadium five minutes north of the lodging, an obvious first-evening target. From there a drift west into Plaka and dinner in the centre.

Lycabettus 17:00 · 45 photos
The signature day, in three clean movements: a late-morning hour through Monastiraki and the Ancient Agora, then the Acropolis and Parthenon across the afternoon - not the dawn visit an earlier read assumed, but the warm middle of the day - and finally the climb up Lycabettus in the late afternoon, the city spreading out below as the light went.

The rest day. Vouliagmeni, on the south-east Athens coast - the saltwater thermal lake and the beach resorts around it. Almost the whole day goes unphotographed, which is the point: a swim day, a beach day, eight hours of deliberately not being a tourist, with a single frame in the late evening to close it.

Hydra midday
The centerpiece of the trip. A morning boarding at Piraeus, a single deck photo as Poros slid past, then Hydra by early afternoon - time in the harbour itself, then the coast walk west to Vlychos and Palamidas through the afternoon, back east to the harbour at dusk, the ferry home, and a last frame at the lodging near midnight. Harbour time and the coast walk, a full fourteen-hour day.

central Athens drift
Mostly central Athens, despite an earlier read that called it a suburbs day. A late-morning climb of Filopappou Hill - the city’s quieter second hill, more local than Lycabettus - a return pass at the Acropolis and Agora, and a long afternoon drift through Syntagma, Plaka and Monastiraki. A midday detour into the leafy northern suburbs of Psychiko and Filothei looks like a genuine wander; the scattered single-frame stops elsewhere are just the route between.

A thin exit day - a few frames along the way out, the last near the airport - then the midday run from Pagkrati to the terminal and the afternoon flight home.
Off-path · per zone

Vlychos + Palamidas (Hydra west)~75%coast-trail villages 30 min walk W of harbour
North Athens suburbs (Sun)~80%Psychiko / Filothei detour
The 55% trip-level off-path is unusually high for a European capital city break — driven by the deliberate non-touristy Pagkrati lodging and the Sunday small N-suburbs detour. One of our most live-like-a-local 2017 trips.

absentNational Archaeological MuseumAthens’s second great indoor draw - not a single photo anywhere near it. A genuine skip.
absentCape Sounion (Poseidon Temple)The classic Athens day-trip south - and not a photo there. We chose Vouliagmeni (closer) and Hydra (further) instead.
absentDelphi / Meteora day tripsBoth checked — 0 photos. Outside the trip’s ~80 km radius, not in scope.
absentOAKA Olympic Stadium (Marousi)0 photos in 500 m. The Marousi 1-photo drive-by isn’t at the stadium.
absentKaisariani MonasteryDespite the geocoder labeling the lodging ‘Kaisariani’, the actual Kaisariani Monastery (~3 km E of the lodging) shows 0 photos.
A trip that deliberately rejected some of the canonical Athens itinerary — no Cape Sounion, no National Archaeological Museum, no OAKA — in favor of the Acropolis + Lycabettus afternoon + Filopappou hills, a Vouliagmeni coast afternoon, a Hydra harbour + W-coast-walk ferry day, and a Sunday central + small N-suburbs detour. The data reads as ‘see Athens like someone with a week, not a checklist’.
