Six days in Athens, with one long Saronic ferry to Hydra
20 - 25 September 2017
Read from 571 photo timestamps across the Athens metro and a Saronic ferry day, with coord-checks against the Acropolis, Lycabettus, the Pagkrati lodging cluster, and the Hydra-Vlychos-Palamidas chain.
The argument
Six days in Athens in late September 2017, hinged on a quiet residential base in Pagkrati a couple of kilometres east of the Acropolis. Three days work the city centre, one slow Friday goes south to the Vouliagmeni coast, and Saturday is the big day: a fourteen-hour Saronic ferry out of Piraeus that touches Poros in passing, lingers in Hydra harbour for the early afternoon, then walks the west coast out to Vlychos and Palamidas before turning back at dusk. The signature day is Thursday - the Acropolis through the warm afternoon, then the climb up Lycabettus as the light goes.

Saturday 23 September - the Saronic ferry day
Piraeus out at dawn, Hydra by midday, a coast walk west to Vlychos and Palamidas through the afternoon, back to the harbour at dusk, late-night ferry home. 224 photos across fourteen hours.

An earlier read of this day said we’d walked past the postcard harbour to get to Vlychos. Looking again, we didn’t. The harbour drew real time before the walk began, and again at the end - the day was a harbour stay and a coast walk, both, not one at the expense of the other. The clear high point of the week.

Panathenaic Stadium 17:39
The morning lost to the flight and the airport transfer, then a long open evening. The first walk goes to the Panathenaic Stadium, the marble 1896 Olympic stadium a few minutes north of the lodging - an obvious first-evening target. From there a drift west into Plaka for the first proper meal.

Lycabettus 17:00-18:00 · 39 photos
Three clean movements. A late-morning hour through Monastiraki and the Ancient Agora, then the Acropolis and Parthenon across the warm middle of the afternoon - not the sunrise visit an earlier read assumed - and finally the climb up Lycabettus in the late afternoon, the city spread out below as the light dropped. The Lycabettus cluster alone holds nearly forty frames.

The rest day. Vouliagmeni, on the south coast - the saltwater thermal lake and the beach resorts around it. Almost the whole day goes unphotographed, which is the point: a swim and a long lunch by the water, eight hours of deliberately not being a tourist, then back to Pagkrati late for dinner.

Vlychos midday + late afternoon
The centre of the trip. Morning ferry out of Piraeus, a single deck photo as Poros slid past, then Hydra by early afternoon - time in the harbour itself, then the coast walk west to Vlychos and on to Palamidas through the afternoon, back east to the harbour at dusk, the late ferry home, a last frame at the lodging just past midnight.

central Athens drift
Mostly central Athens. A late-morning climb of Filopappou Hill - the city’s quieter second hill, more local than Lycabettus - a return pass at the Acropolis and Agora, and a long afternoon drift through Syntagma, Plaka and Monastiraki. A midday detour ran north into the leafy suburbs of Psychiko and Filothei, with a few outlying frames further N near Iraklio that read more as drive-by than destination.

A thin exit day. A few frames near the lodging, a long static cluster in the Renti district mid-afternoon - more a slow lunch and luggage stop than a place we set out to see - then the run to the terminal and the evening flight home.

A 55% trip-level off-path read is high for a European capital city break, driven by the Pagkrati base (residential, not central-Plaka), the west-coast walk on Hydra beyond the harbour, and the Sunday detour into the northern suburbs. One of our more live-like-a-local 2017 trips.
Negative space
absentNational Archaeological MuseumAthens’s second great indoor draw - not a photo near it all week. A genuine skip.
absentCape SounionThe classic Athens day-trip south to the Temple of Poseidon - no photos. The coast day went to Vouliagmeni (closer) and the long day went west to Hydra (further) instead.
absentDelphi0 photos. Outside the trip’s ~80 km working radius, not in scope.
absentMeteora0 photos. Outside the trip’s ~80 km working radius, not in scope.
absentOAKA Olympic Stadium (Marousi)0 photos in 500 m of the stadium. The single Marousi frame on Sunday is a drive-by, not a stop.
absentKaisariani MonasteryThe Pagkrati lodging sits on the western edge of the Kaisariani district, but the actual Kaisariani Monastery (~3 km east of the lodging, in the foothills of Mount Hymettus) shows 0 photos.
A trip that quietly declined the canonical Athens checklist - no Sounion, no National Archaeological Museum, no OAKA - in favour of the Acropolis-and-Lycabettus afternoon, a Vouliagmeni coast day, a long Hydra ferry, and a Sunday that mixed central Athens with a small northern-suburbs detour. The shape is ‘see Athens like someone with a week, not a checklist’.
