Andalusia

Thirty-one days, 2,383 photos, an extended stay in Seville

17 February - 19 March 2019

Read from 2,383 photo timestamps and the Caminito - Bobastro morning of Mar 8 over 31 days across Spain, Morocco and Gibraltar.

A month living in Seville, mid-February into late March 2019, with eight substantial excursions fanning out across Andalusia, Morocco and Gibraltar. The rhythm was live in Seville, then go somewhere new every few days: a day in Cádiz, an overnight in Tangier across the strait, the photo-peak Saturday at Gibraltar, two days into the Doñana and Huelva villages, the three-day Antequera - Caminito del Rey - Granada - Málaga arc east, and the Ronda white villages to finish. The Real Alcázar drew us back on nine separate days - not a one-and-done monument but the trip’s gravity well.

2 March · 299 photos at Gibraltar

The trip's photo-densest single day. A 4.8 km walk up the Upper Rock plus 1.4 km of city walking - the British overseas territory at the foot of the Rock photographed thoroughly in one Saturday.

Gibraltar + La Línea de la Concepción + Alcalá de los Gazules
Walk profile
Upper Rock + Apes' Den (likely)

Almost three hundred photos out of one tiny territory in a single Saturday - the densest day of the whole month. The shape of the walk reads as the classic Gibraltar day: up onto the Upper Rock, the Apes’ Den, the long views back over the strait. The drive added a white-village stop at Alcalá de los Gazules on the way out.

The Real Alcázar, returned to on nine separate days - the trip’s true gravity well, not a one-and-done monument but a garden we kept coming back to, the way you treat a park you live near.

  • Feb 17-22 - the settle-in week: easy Seville walks, learning the streets, no excursions yet.
  • Feb 23 - the first big day out, a train south to Cádiz for the old town, the cathedral, the seafront castles and the Atlantic.
  • Feb 24-25 - Tangier, the ferry from Tarifa and an overnight across the strait, then back to Seville the next afternoon.
  • Feb 26 - Mar 1 - four quiet Seville days, the residency rhythm reasserting itself.
  • Mar 2 - the Gibraltar Saturday, the densest day of the whole month, up onto the Rock.
  • Mar 3 - the Doñana and Huelva country: Almonte, Niebla, Moguer and Palos de la Frontera, the Columbus villages and the Roman walls folded into one day.
  • Mar 4-7 - four more quiet days at the base, with a long Real Alcázar return on the 5th.
  • Mar 8 - the Antequera arc east: the El Caminito del Rey gorge in the morning and the Bobastro Mozarabic ruins above Ardales just after, then Antequera town and a night in Málaga.
  • Mar 9 - Granada from the Málaga base, with the coast on the return through Almuñécar.
  • Mar 10 - a Málaga old-town day before the drive back to Seville.
  • Mar 11-15 - five recovery days, the month at its quietest.
  • Mar 16 - a return to Doñana - Almonte, Moguer, Palos de la Frontera again, the place that earned a second visit.
  • Mar 17 - Ronda and the white villages: Setenil de las Bodegas tucked under its rock and Júzcar, the blue village.
  • Mar 18-19 - the final wind-down and the flight home via Frankfurt.

Country reach
Spain + Morocco + Gibraltar - all from the Seville base
Anchor reuse
Seville reused 27×; Málaga 2× (east arc); all other places single-visit
  1. Seville (anchor) ~5% top-decile Spanish city
  2. Cádiz ~20% canonical Seville day-trip
  3. Tangier ~40% less-photographed than Marrakesh / Fes
  4. Gibraltar ~20% small but heavily touristed
  5. Doñana / Huelva villages ~70% Almonte, Niebla, Moguer, Palos - real off-path
  6. Caminito + Bobastro ~45% Caminito mid-baseline since 2015 reopening; Bobastro genuinely quiet
  7. El Torcal de Antequera ~35% well-known karst but not top-tier
  8. Granada ~5% Andalusia’s #3 - top-decile
  9. Ronda ~25% Pueblos Blancos flagship - mainstream
  10. Setenil / Júzcar ~55% the deeper Pueblos Blancos

The trip-level off-path average hides the structure: the anchor and the canonical city excursions (Seville, Granada, Cádiz, Ronda, Gibraltar) sit at 5-25%, while the Doñana-area villages (Almonte, Niebla, Moguer, Palos de la Frontera) and the deeper Pueblos Blancos (Setenil, Júzcar) are at 55-70%. These are real off-path Andalusia.

  1. absent Córdoba Coord-checked at the Mezquita interior, the cathedral and the old town: 0 photos. Andalusia’s #4 city, only a couple of hours away by train, but never on the day-trip list. The trip’s most surprising absence.
  2. absent Alhambra ticketed interior The Mar 9 cluster sits tight around the Alhambra plateau - the grounds were walked, but the ticketed Nasrid palaces interior cannot be confirmed from photo coordinates alone.
  3. absent Lanjarón Coord-checked across the three best-known Alpujarras villages: 0 photos. The mountain villages south of the Mar 9 day were never approached.
  4. absent Pampaneira Coord-checked across the three best-known Alpujarras villages: 0 photos. The mountain villages south of the Mar 9 day were never approached.
  5. absent Capileira Coord-checked across the three best-known Alpujarras villages: 0 photos. The mountain villages south of the Mar 9 day were never approached.
  6. absent Doñana wetland reserve interior Mar 3 and Mar 16 reached the surrounding villages and the El Rocío gateway inside Doñana municipal territory; the deeper guided-tour zones (Acebrón visitor centre and the protected marshes) drew zero photos.
  7. absent Picasso Museum ticketed interior Mar 10’s old-town walk produced 21 photos within 500 m of the museum coords - the building was passed, almost certainly photographed from outside, but the ticketed interior cannot be confirmed from the data.
  8. absent Vejer de la Frontera Coord-checked: 0 photos. The classic Cádiz-coast Pueblo Blanco was not on the Feb 23 route.
  9. absent Tarifa Only 1 photo, at the ferry port on Feb 24. The town itself - the surf-and-kite capital of the strait - was passed through, not visited.
  10. absent Marbella Coord-checked: 0 photos. The Costa del Sol resort coast was bypassed entirely on the east arc.
  11. absent Sierra Nevada The Mar 9 day stayed on the Granada plateau and dropped to the coast at Almuñécar - the high mountains an hour east were never approached.

A trip about being somewhere rather than collecting sights. We lived in Seville for a month and used it to taste Andalusia widely rather than deeply. The one genuinely surprising absence is Córdoba - close, famous, easy by train - skipped precisely because it would have been a half-day of travel just to check a box, and that wasn’t what this month was for.
