Five days in Amsterdam with two outward-bound day-trips, late August 2017. 643 photos: an Amsterdam anchor across 5 evenings, plus a Friday excursion south to Amsterdamse Bos and Ouderkerk aan de Amstel (an Amstel-river village beloved by Amsterdam locals), and a Saturday excursion west to The Hague, Scheveningen pier and the Bollenstreek tulip-field coast. The structural signature: 3 city-center days frame 2 day-trips that each push 30-60 km outward. The two excursion days alone produce 374 photos - 58% of the trip.
The trip's photo-densest day. Amsterdamse Bos at midday, then on to a 1,300-resident Amstel-river village in the late afternoon, then home to Amsterdam well after dark.
The day chose the green belt and the village over Amstelveen’s museum center. Amsterdamse Bos is the wooded park that spans the Amsterdam-Amstelveen border; Ouderkerk aan de Amstel is a small Amstel-river village that locals reach by bike on warm afternoons. Both sit south of the city - the ‘Amstelveen’ locality tag flattens what was really a two-stop southern arc with the museum quietly skipped in between.
Arrival via Schiphol. Photo activity builds from 10:00 onward - landed mid-morning, train into Amsterdam, walking by ~11:00. 134 photos across 11+ active hours is a steady-but-not-frenzied pace - a settling-in day, not a Day-1 frenzy.
The trip’s lowest-photo full day - a museum day, confirmed by coord-checks. Anne Frank House, Westerkerk and the Jordaan cluster within 150 m at midday (13 + 6 + 13 overlapping). Rijksmuseum 8 photos · Van Gogh Museum 14 photos at 12:15-12:50. Vondelpark edge afternoon. De Pijp 15:32-16:26 (14 photos). The low photo rate is consistent with indoor stretches where photographs are restricted or simply less appealing than the exterior subjects.
The trip’s photo-densest day. The ‘Amstelveen’ locality tag covers a wide southern band - coord-checking shows: Amsterdamse Bos (forest park spanning the AMS/Amstelveen border) 35 photos at 11:51-14:25, Ouderkerk aan de Amstel 20+22 photos at 16:59-18:58, then back to AMS center late evening. The Cobra Museum (Amstelveen’s famous indoor attraction) shows 0 photos - the day crossed into the green belt, not the civic center. Ouderkerk is the most off-path coord of the trip - a 1,300-resident village.
The trip’s westward arc - 60 km W. The Hague Binnenhof and Vredespaleis 39+ photos at 15:47-17:37, Scheveningen pier and beach ~40 photos at 13:51-14:17, Bollenstreek (Hillegom area) ~26 photos en route. Route reads cleanly: train or car to The Hague midday, then Scheveningen pier and beach early afternoon, then The Hague again late afternoon, then Bollenstreek on the drive back. Late return to AMS by 21:18.
A half-day pattern. 44 photos starting at 12:02 - a slow Sunday morning (sleep in, brunch, pack), then a few final hours in Amsterdam (canals and a final coffee), then Schiphol for the evening flight home.
The 40% trip-level off-path is one of the higher 2017 scores for a Western-European trip - driven entirely by the two day-trips. The center-Amsterdam portion alone would score in the single digits. The Friday push S to Ouderkerk is the trip’s most off-path coord; the Saturday Bollenstreek detour is the second.
Two specific directions, not all directions. The northern windmill villages, the alternative day-trip cities (Rotterdam, Delft, Utrecht, Haarlem), and the Cobra Museum within Amstelveen all got skipped. Breadth in two chosen vectors - not breadth in all.
