Alps to Scandinavia

Forty-three days, 4,554 photos, twelve countries from Bucharest by car

29 June - 10 August 2021

Read from 4,554 photo timestamps across 12 countries and 11 logged walks/hikes, on the user's own-car format from Bucharest.

We drove out of Bucharest at the end of June, gave Austria eleven days from a Hallein base near Salzburg, then crossed into the heart of the Alps for over two weeks - Switzerland, the Italian Aosta valley, a one-day Liechtenstein pickup, and Chamonix under Mont Blanc - before turning north through Germany into Denmark and Sweden, and the long road home. Twelve countries touched, around 95 km on foot. The loudest day was an early-July Salzkammergut sweep in Austria, with the Swiss high passes and a Copenhagen day close behind.

Compared to 2019 Nordic
Shorter (43d vs 56d) · denser · more alpine, less Norway
Norway choice
Deliberately skipped — done summer prior
  1. Hallein + Salzkammergut ~20% popular but not Hallstatt-peak
  2. Italian Aosta (Pratolungo) ~55% off the canonical Italian-Alps map
  3. Liechtenstein ~30% rare-country pickup
  4. Swiss Bernese Oberland ~5% top-decile alpine
  5. Chamonix-Mont-Blanc ~0% top-decile global
  6. Copenhagen ~5% capital standard
  7. Sweden Gothenburg ~20% chose this over Stockholm
  1. absent Stockholm The user chose Gothenburg. Stockholm is missing from the Sweden coord trace entirely.
  2. absent Hallstatt town Touched the Salzkammergut region but no clear UNESCO-Hallstatt-village cluster surfaces.
  3. absent Innsbruck Drove through Tyrol but no Innsbruck dwell — the Austrian alpine line passes around it.
  4. absent Berlin DE transit only on the way north and home — Berlin is not on the coord trace.
  5. absent Norway Deliberately avoided — the user did Norway the prior summer in the 2019 Nordic trip.
  6. absent Hamburg DE northern transit toward Denmark; no dwell cluster.

A mostly-canonical Alps + Scandinavia run where the off-path adds come from the Italian-Aosta + Liechtenstein + Gothenburg-not-Stockholm choices. The skipped places are either repeats from the prior year (Norway) or non-target Germanies. The user-shape choice: 3-day anchors, no anchor reuse, no single-city deep-dive.
