Alps to Scandinavia

Forty-three days, 4,554 photos, eight countries from Bucharest by car

29 June - 10 August 2021

Read from 4,554 photo timestamps across eight countries, ten logged hikes, two long cycling rides in Austria, and one morning paddle in Dalsland.

We drove out of Bucharest on 29 June, picked up the Wachau valley in Lower Austria for two days - including a 60.8 km loop ride along the Danube from Spitz - then settled into Styria, the Hallein and Tennengebirge area and the high Hohe Tauern. 5 July was the trip’s peak day - 322 photos along the Großglockner High Alpine Road from Ramsau to Heiligenblut and up to the Pasterze glacier. From there the Zillertal (a 14 km Olperer-hut hike), Vorarlberg and the Bodensee fed us into Liechtenstein on 12 July, then a long Swiss-Italian arc - Appenzell’s Ebenalp, Lago Maggiore, the Valais up to Bettmeralp and Zermatt’s Matterhorn-glacier trail, Chamonix under Mont Blanc on 19-20 July, and the Bernese Oberland’s Schynige Platte to First on 22 July. Then north across Germany to the west coast of Jutland - Rømø, Thy, the dunes around Kandestederne and Skagen - and into Gothenburg and the Bohuslän coast, with a Dalsland morning on the water before the long drive home through Malmö.

5 July · the Großglockner High Alpine Road

The trip's peak day. 322 photos from Ramsau bei Berchtesgaden across the Hohe Tauern to Heiligenblut, then the 8.4 km Margaritzenstausee and Pasterze-glacier walk out of the Glocknerhaus.

Localities
Ramsau bei Berchtesgaden · Fusch · Rauris · Heiligenblut am Großglockner

A canonical alpine day on what may be the most photographed mountain road in Europe. The morning is the Berchtesgadener Land - Hintersee and Ramsau - then the long climb up the Großglocknerstraße from Fusch, Edelweißspitze, and the drop to Heiligenblut. The hike out of the Glocknerhaus walks down to the Margaritzenstausee under the north face of the Großglockner and onto the Pasterze, Austria’s largest and rapidly retreating glacier.

Hike geography

Cycling
Two logged rides · Wachau loop on 1 Jul (60.8 km / 878 m) · Lake Constance from Bregenz on 10 Jul (55.8 km)
  1. Wachau valley ~25% UNESCO standard but quiet on a Thursday
  2. Tennengebirge + Hochkönig ~60% off the canonical Salzburg map
  3. Großglockner road + Pasterze ~5% top-decile Austrian alpine
  4. Zillertal / Schlegeisspeicher ~20% popular hike, less popular trail
  5. Appenzell / Ebenalp ~10% the Aescher photo is everywhere
  6. Liechtenstein ~30% rare-country pickup
  7. Pratolungo / Italian lakes ~55% Lago Maggiore lakeside hamlet, off the Como/Milan circuit
  8. Aletsch / Bettmeralp ~15% the longest glacier in the Alps
  9. Zermatt / Matterhorn Glacier ~0% top-decile global
  10. Chamonix-Mont-Blanc ~0% top-decile global
  11. Bernese Oberland / First ~5% Bachalpsee is on every poster
  12. Jutland west coast ~60% non-Copenhagen Denmark - busy at home, quiet on the international map
  13. Skagen / Grenen ~20% Danish summer-tourist standard
  14. Bohuslän archipelago ~40% Swedish-domestic top-tier, low international
  15. Dalsland ~75% deep off-path forest country
  1. absent Copenhagen The Denmark stretch lives entirely on the Jutland west and north coasts - we never go east to Zealand or Copenhagen.
  2. absent Stockholm Sweden is Gothenburg, Bohuslän and Dalsland - Stockholm is missing from the trace entirely.
  3. absent Hallstatt town We touched the Salzkammergut at Altaussee and Sankt Gilgen on 2 July but never the UNESCO village itself.
  4. absent Innsbruck We drove through Tyrol on 8 July but no Innsbruck dwell - the Brenner line passes around it.
  5. absent Aosta Valley The Italian middle of the trip is Lago Maggiore and Milan, not Aosta - Courmayeur shows up as a single photo on the Chamonix day, no more.
  6. absent Berlin Germany is pure transit on the way north (Würzburg-Kassel-Bremen-Hamburg) and the way home - Berlin is not on the trace.
  7. absent Norway Deliberately avoided - we had done Norway the prior summer in the 2019 Nordic trip.

An Alps-canonical trip with a non-canonical Scandinavia tail. The Alps side hits the headline names (Großglockner, Olperer, Aescher, Aletsch, Zermatt, Chamonix, Bachalpsee). The Scandinavia side does the opposite - skips Copenhagen and Stockholm and lives instead on the Jutland west coast and the Bohuslän archipelago. The skipped places are either repeats from the prior year (Norway) or deliberate non-choices (the two Nordic capitals).
